    Fishing with Mobs

I've been doing a lot of fishing lately and I'll post some of my catches here.

Yesterday I went fishing with a throw net and a hand net. The hand net I used to stuff into crevices on the side of the river bank and see what I could catch.

I caught a few of these but most were caught by the father in-law. Not sure exactly what they all were but there is a small snakehead, frogs, crabs, bottom feeders and the shiny ones are a type of barb.

The little ones are great fried and the rest we used in a soup with vegetables we gathered on the side of the river.

Here is what the throw net looks like. Not my photo but you get the idea.

Mobs00 do you know of the danger eating fresh water fish in Thailand ? The fluke that lives in the gills cause liver cancer and it's believed 6 million Thais are infected with them. Sorry to put a downer on you thread.

Looks like you can get it only if you consume raw freshwater fish.

Thailand doesn't have that many naturally large fish in its smaller waterways. As you show from the picture, farmers take pretty much everything that they can. My relatives do the same. They also take any bugs they can get too. The rivers in Esarn practically dry up in the dry season so there's not a lot of places to hide in them. Near our house in Surin there's a reservoir which probably has a few odd fish that haven't been caught. Luckily there is a temple near it that cordons off an area trying to protect the fish. Most of the fish in the reservior probably are the equivalent to stocked fish anyways.

In the large rivers like the Chao Phya and Mekong there probably are some large naturals left but with so many people fishing all the time and I would guess not real rules how much longer will they last? Every once in a while there is some factory here or there that lets its waste flow into the river as well. That doesn't help the native fish species out there.

By the way Mobs, what province are you fishing in? I think I remember you posting something about fishing a while back. Was that you or someone else here?

Are you talking about Pla-ra in Somtam or what?
Dont think the thais do care if they get cancer from it.. You better tell people (or yourself) to stop smoking if worry so much about cancer. You better avoid staying the sun because you are taking a risk to get skin cancer!

    A typically intelligent Thai response.

The Thai's really do have he rod and reel fishing down. I just can't seem to catch a thing with the bait that they use. I think I'm using the wrong magic charms or something.

Here are are a few pics from a larger river in the area. When I was in the water I didn't have a camera and when 2 groups of monks floated past on bamboo rafts in the middle of the river, one on each side of me, I then wished I had.

The picture below is only a few of the fish we caught, the rest are BBQ. We caught a big Thai Maseer, about a kilo in weight.

This same spot we are fishing at gets some foreigners on guided fishing trips who pay 9000 THB a day!

Interesting story and nice pics, thankyou.

The connection between worms and bile cancer seems strange, though.
However, worms in themselves are bad enough and a periodic self-treatment for worms is a good idea after being subjected to the under-cooking of Isaan..
