    Pracha: Bangkok won’t be flooded

Bangkok will not be affected by the widespread flooding, Deputy Prime Minister and director of the Flood Relief Operation Centre Pracha Promnok said at a press conference on Friday.

The government’s flood war room has given the highest priority to the protection of inner areas of the capital. It is working hard to drive the overflow out to the sea through the Chao Phraya River, cannels in the western and eastern parts of Bangkok, Pol Gen Pracha said.

“The runoff from the North is now under control and Bangkok will not be inundated”, the justice minister reaffirmed.

Chalit Damrongsak, director general of the Royal Irrigation Department, took the same tone.

He insisted that Bangkok will not be severely flooded because the amount of water running down from the North into the Chao Phraya River in Nakhon Sawan and Chainat was lesser than earlier projected.

The flow was only 3,600 cubic metres per second, lower than earlier expected at 3,800 cubic metres. Moreover, several dams have now released lesser amount of water than before, he added.

“The level of the flow in Chao Phraya which will arrive in Bangkok on October 15-16 would not be higher than 2.3 to 2.4 metres. But the floodwalls in Bangkok is 2.5 metres high, therefore, Bangkok is safe”, said Mr Chalit.

PM: Flood Crisis out of Govt's Control

    UPDATE : 19 October 2011

The prime minister admits the flood situation has spun out of her government's control given the water volume is extremely larger than in past years.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said the flood situation has already worsened beyond the government's control as the volume of floodwater is larger than that in previous years and she is only a part of the system in charge of resolving the problem.

Yingluck admitted related agencies must work more systematically and cooperation from all parties is needed to tackle the current crisis.

The prime minister maintained the information given by the Flood Relief Operations Center is accurate and extensive, but the comments made by relevant parties may be different so the center will provide information in the form of an official statement.

Yingluck said she is not sure if Bangkok's Don Muang District will be submerged under one to two meters deep water as suggested by Science and Technology Minister Plodprasop Surasawadee while adding she is unable to determine which areas of the capital will be inundated.

She remarked the drainage gates of canals 1 to 6 in Pathum Thani's Rangsit District are opened now to help ease the floods in their vicinities.

She pledged the government will do its utmost to protect inner Bangkok from flooding.

Meanwhile, Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki Moon called the prime minister to discuss aid for Thailand's flood crisis.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

Floods Disrupt Traffic on Paholyothin Road

    UPDATE : 19 October 2011

Flooding on the outbound lanes of Paholyothin Road has caused traffic congestion.

Traffic has been heavily congested on the outbound lanes of Paholyothin Road after it has been inundated by 50-centimeter-deep floodwater.

The overflow from Rangsit Canal and a runoff from Klong Luang District has inundated the outbound lanes of Paholyothin Road, heading North, from the area in front of the Future Park Rangsit Mall, causing heavy traffic congestion.

The shopping mall itself is closed today.

The road is now under 30 to 50 centimeters of floodwater, rendering passage by small vehicles impossible.

Massive traffic jams were also witnessed on Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok Road with a large number of public buses en route to Klong 1 Bridge to help with the evacuation of residents.

Floodwater from the Navanakhon Industrial Estate has inundated a 500-meter stretch of Rangsit-Pathum Thani Road in front of Rangsit Market in Thanyaburi District.

In the meantime, floods continued to wreak havoc in Pathum Thani's Muang District, submerging many housing estates.

They include Chuan Chuen Flora Ville in Bang Kurad Subdistrict and Supmuensaen Village and Panason Village in Ban Chang Subdistrict.

In Ayutthaya, Governor Wittaya Phewphong said the flood situation in the province has begun to stabilize, but natural water sources have been polluted by the unsightly accumulation of garbage.

The province has drawn up a waste management plan.

A budget of 50 million baht is expected to solve the pollution problem during and after the floods.

To save Bangkok they should have done a lot of things a long time ago. I guess what happened in 1942 was fun and filling in all of the canals since was a good idea.

Right on. I may be old fashioned but I think the land was made to plant not pave.
