PHUKET: Anonymous allegations were made yesterday about sex for sale in the basement retail area of Patong's leading shopping mall.
Management of the Jungceylon mall, which rents the area to outsider retailers, have called for a full report on the allegations from the shopkeepers in the 'That's Siam' section, a popular souvenir-hunting destination for Phuket tourists.
Other anonymous allegations were made as senior officials gathered to discuss complaints made to the Damrungtam office, Phuket's equivalent of a Eurpoean-style Ombusdsman.
An unsigned letter alleged that two policemen, who were named in the letter, took a cut from the sale of sex in 'That's Siam.' The officers, stationed at Kathu, allowed the prostitutes from Laos, Burma and Vietnam to operate by gathering customers at 'That's Siam.'
Vic Governor Somkiet Sangkaosutthriak, chairing the meeting at Patong tessaban council, said the anonymous claims needed to be treated with scepticicism until they were proved or disproved.
Another allegation involved a ''sex for sale'' stall that had allegedly been set up in a soi running between Patong's beach road and Rat-U-Tit-200 Pi Road, where tourists were able to negotiate to buy female prostitutes.
All allegations would be investigated, Vice Givernor Somkiet said.
Phuket Labor Office Director Noppadon Ploy-Audee told the meeting that five Vietnamese women had been arrested for prostitution last week. They had been on Phuket on tourist visas, he said.
