Would be interesting if that turned out to be more than wishful thinking. We'll see.

Not exactly relevant, but as amusing as the animal signs were, I found them equally disturbing, part of a consistent campaign to dehumanize the opposition by the radical right (PAD) if not the more genteel representatives of the Democrat Party. Dehumanization of the adversary is the first step towards the kind of horror witnessed at Thammasat in '76 and Wat Pathumwanaram last year. If the reds decide to respond in kind- and here's hoping they don't- it will result in a lot more than well-insured shopping malls and bank branches going down in flames.

^ I think you're right about the PAD. Ironically, they helped to get rid of Samak who was one of their buddies in '76...

Y must accept every Thai as equal and respect them all; this is a fundamental problem now. I've posted many times how my 'hiso' colleagues have zero respect for anybody with dark skin/not of their clan. Terms like Kwai, labourer, uneducated, stupid, etc, are commonly used to describe 60+ million people, and they truly believe it...

Let's hope the PAD are dead. Any work by them now will only be negative for their backers...

Just remind them they are actually living in Thailand, not China. Of course, if they feel they must be surrounded by superior intellects like themself, they can always exercise their right of return to their native land. It is considerably easier for a Chinese person to return to China than it is for them to leave.

Good point. I like to ask them why if things Chinese are so superior why is life is so much better for most Chinese here than it is there. I should mention that I do know Chinese Thais who are on the right side of this argument, by the way.

"zero respect for anybody with dark skin" What really gets my goat is when I meet darker-skinned people who have swallowed the "whiter is better" argument.

^ it's not an argument, Robuzo. It's a non-stop barrage of propaganda from every element of society; from school books to soap operas. That's the whole point of the system...

I meant the argument about the superiority of all things Chinese. I think the "white good dark bad" in some ways predates the ascendancy of the Chinese minority in Thailand, although it has gotten completely out of hand in recent years at least in large part because of that ascendancy. Would Yingluck have done as well if she had a healthy tan instead of looking all pasty (revealing my own prejudice here)? Probably not, and the sad thing is that would probably be the case among dark-skinned voters as well.

It is sad but true. It will take generations to change. Like the comments here that Thais are fwits ets etc. Sad that some people still hold onto colour and class distinctions so doggedly.

The same prejudice exists within China actually- the taller, lighter skinned Mongol halfbreeds of the North look down on the shorter, darker Han purebreds in the south.

^Part and parcel of the nearly universal prejudice against people who work for a living in the fields. There was a time when your average western male would not have found skinny girl with a suntan attractive at all. (Check out Spike Lee's "School Daze" for an entertaining look at color caste prejudice among American blacks.)

the class and race issue that there is in Thailand with the HiSo Chinese has nothing to do with Democracy,

I do agree that such social gap are unacceptable though,

    Chalerm: End the speculation

Chalerm Yubamrung, elected on the Pheu Thai party list, has called on party members to stop speculating about who will be given cabinet portfolios.

He said his name was among those being tossd around.

Mr Chalerm said he had never jockeyed for a cabinet post. The decision on cabinet ministers should be made by Yingluck Shinawatra, who stands to be named prime minister.

Those who had started to demand various political posts were causing damage to the party. Acting this way would only serve to erode the people's faith in the party and Ms Yingluck, he said.

"From now on, I will look on whoever talks about me taking this or that position as wishing me ill.

"It is not that I have helped the party campaign hard and deserve a position. I was just doing my duty as a party member. Even if I am not given a position, I will not mind," Mr Chalerm said.

He callled for fellow party members to have confidence in the cabinet yet to come. Since Ms Yingluck's father is a former MP and her elder brother a former prime minister, she was likely to be able to pick the right people for the right jobs, he added.

On his son Wan's defeat in Bangkok's Constituency 28 by only about 1,000 votes, Mr Chalerm said a petition had been submitted to the Election Commission for a vote recount, because there were as many as 4,000 bad ballots.

A complaint had also been filed against Bang Khun Thien police for election law violations that could lead to a new election in the constituency.

If the EC did not respond to the petition, his son could work for the people outside parliament, Mr Chalerm said.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

Chalerm denies requesting post from Pheu Thai

BANGKOK, 6 July 2011 (NNT) – Former Pheu Thai MPs Chairperson Police Captain Chalerm Yubumrung has dismissed a rumour that he was requesting a ministerial post from the Pheu Thai Party.

Speaking at his residence in Bangbon area, Police Captain Chalerm stated that he, as a Pheu Thai MP, would like to congratulate the party on its landslide victory in the 3 July election as well as Ms Yingluck Shinawatra upon receiving voters’ mandate to be the next prime minister.

The Pheu Thai heavyweight added that he was neither involved in the selection of qualified people to sit in the cabinet nor asking for any position from the Pheu Thai Party. He pointed out that placements of persons in key jobs are only based on the decision of Ms Yingluck and party executives.

Police Captain Chalerm has been speculated to be appointed to several important posts such as the new house speaker, interior minister and justice minister.

I think Chalerm's ego has descended somewhat thanks to recent events, from outer space to the troposphere.
