Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday promised his taxi-driver vote base he would launch a tax refund campaign for first-time car buyers, credit cards for taxi drivers and personal loans that allow cross guarantees.

Through video-link at Imperial World Lat Phrao, Thaksin and some Pheu Thai MPs listened to problems raised by an audience of taxi and motorcycle taxi drivers and told them how the party would help.

"Farmers will be getting credit cards, now taxi drivers should get them, too," Thaksin said. The credit card would be for fuel costs, Thaksin said, adding that he did not want to give out details for fear that rival parties would copy the policies.

Bangkok MP Anudith Nakornthap said the tax refund campaign would be provided for first-time car buyers, no matter whether the car was for personal use or to be hired. Excise tax would be cut so car prices would fall.

Thaksin gave the example that the cost of a new taxi could be reduced from Bt900,000 to a little over Bt600,000 after the excise tax refund.

Addressing the problem of drivers being unable to get loans to buy taxis as they could not find a guarantor, Thaksin said his policies would allow fellow taxi drivers to cross guarantee for the loans, even though they were all borrowers.

Thaksin said if Pheu Thai formed the government, he would reorganise government agencies and stop the practice of positions being brought, which was corruption that led to officers bullying taxi drivers.
    - What's this about 'farmers getting credit cards' ??

That's going to conflict a few PT/Red supporters here. Any of you want to claim that having him or his sons in power would be a good thing for the country?

The opposition Pheu Thai Party enjoys a slim lead over the ruling Democrat Party although most voters remain undecided which party to vote for in the upcoming general election, a public opinion survey has found.

More than 23 per cent of the respondents favoured Pheu Thai, compared to 20.2 per cent who opted for the Democrats, almost 3 per cent who would vote for the Bhum Jai Thai Party, and less than 1 per cent for other parties, according to results of the poll by the National Institute of Development Administration (Nida).

Almost 53 per cent of those surveyed said they remained undecided about their choice in the next election.

The survey was conducted on 1,203 people in all regions of the country on Monday and Tuesday.

Thaksin uses Skype to make promises

Thaksin uses Skype to make promises

    By The Nation on Sunday
    Published on May 8, 2011

Fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday said he had a project in store that would help bring unity among Thais and that the country would no longer be divided by political colours.

Thaksin was speaking during a one-hour speech through Skype to address a seminar panel at Sai Net market in Bangkok's Khan Na Yow district attended by Pheu Thai Party MPs.

"I have this project in my mind but I am not going to speak about it now because this government is a copy cat and is equipped with state budget for advertisement. They have even copied my first home project. So I will announce this project during the last corner in the run-up to the election,'' he said.

Thaksin, whose government initiated the One Million Baht Village Fund, said in order that money reach the grass roots, the fund should be increased by Bt1 million for each village.

He attacked the Abhisit government for its failure to stem rising prices, causing low-income earners to suffer.

"The government does not understand the suffering of the poor because government leaders have never faced economic hardship. They only talk to large traders. If I were them I would call a meeting of giant traders such as CP and Sahapat Group to discuss prices in order to get to know the real cost and bring about fairness to retailers and consumers."

He said the root causes of economic problems include the fast-changing world economy, the failure to bring about truly free trade, and corruption of politicians and state officials.

To solve the economic problem that people earn low income but prices keep rising is to have debt moratoriums, Thaksin said, adding that he supported the project to build more markets and stop street hawkers initiated by Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan when she was in office.

"We must give back pedestrians their walk path and increase markets."

Thaksin will today make his speech through Skype to the Pheu Thai Party seminar panel in Khlong Toei.

Meanwhile, Pheu Thai Party Bangkok MP Anudit Nakhonthap said election campaign signs of the party in 50 districts of Bangkok have been removed. He accused state officials of not being neutral and keeping the election campaign signs of some parties.

Have this in context, before Thaksin moto taxis were under a mafia controlled from - another story - but Thaksin ended this mafia. And after that motorbike taxis were free. So no wonder they support Thaksin. (There is an academic paper on this for SD, need a link?).

Yep. You know shite as is easily discernable from your past postings.

    a) There was in a program introduced a few years back, where queue vests were issued to 'registered' motor bike taxis. Sounds fine and reasonable until you see what happened afterwards.
    i) there was a limited number available, based on 'police recommendations' for the local districts.
ii) the drivers who took them were 'allocated' them by the queue bosses. Yeah sure they were free to go and get one themselves, but try and operate without queue boss approval meant a kicking.
iii) the drivers 'issued' with them 'sold' them back to the queue bosses when they moved out of the area as they are 'non-transferable'.
    b) I've lived here for 30 years and speak fluent Thai, yes I know when crap is being pulled on me but this is not one of those occasions as I've heard the same stories from existing motorbike taxi drivers when I use them and chat to them.
    c) Don't take my word for it, go and ask one yourself. Or ask any Thai how that system works.
    d) Who gives a fuck about spelling you twat, one persons phonetics are different to another - in my case I tend to add the 'silent' pronounciated consonants to the spelling as a reminder to myself to improve my own pronounciation (which still needs work, I admit)

Election won't end colour clashes, says academic

THAMMASAT RECTOR EXPECTS POLITICAL DIVISIONS TO REMAIN AFTER VOTE
Thailand is likely to face further political turmoil from ''outside parliament'' movements no matter which party _ the Democrats or Pheu Thai _ forms the next government, Thammasat University rector Somkid Lertpaitoon warned yesterday.

Mr Somkid said that despite the promises they are now making to woo voters in what he believed would be a heated election, no party would be able to put a permanent end to the long-running political conflict, even with a full mandate after the vote.

''Shirts of all colours will continue rallying outside parliament,'' said Mr Somkid, also a member of the 2007 Constitution Drafting Committee. He was speaking yesterday on the sidelines of an academic forum at Thammasat University to mark the 70th birthday of former rector Charnvit Kasetsiri.

United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship chairwoman Thida Thavornseth announced earlier that red shirt supporters would continue their movement outside the House in parallel with their Pheu Thai Party allies. Leaders of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), who plan to end their current protest next month, vow to closely monitor the Thai-Cambodian border conflict no matter which party takes power.

    <snip>

Mr Somkid disagreed with the political movements outside parliament. All conflicts should be resolved in the House, he said. Only then can Thailand move forward and be ''on a par with civilised nations'', he said.

Each political party would face tough competition in the election because the number of MPs has been reduced from 400 to 375 to compete in single constituencies, Mr Somkid said.

(article continues at the link, but nothing new)

Ya don't say. Real Rector material.

It's not the case in any democracy that political divisions dissolve after an election. There are staunch supporters of both parties- and the losers sulk. It's the 'swingers' or undecideds that determine the outcome of an election, not the diehards.

The difference is, our losers tend not to occupy seats of government and international airports with mobs. They tend not to advocate Military coups, and the repeated disenfranchisement of the popular vote. They have a respect for the democratic system apparently, and believe the importance of the system and it's institutions and laws to considerably outweigh some bruised ego's on the losing side.
