Death and illness as cold weather embraces nation

The Public Health Ministry confirmed yesterday that at least two people had died in the cold weather - one in Loei and the other in Chiang Rai.

"Victims in this category are people who died because they lacked warm clothes and lived in areas declared as being hit by a cold spell," Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said.

Jurin said his ministry was checking whether two other deaths in Kalasin and Surin were also due to the cold spell.

In recent days, temperatures have dropped across most of the country.

Influenza, pneumonia, measles, German measles, chickenpox and diarrhoea are usually common in the wake of lower temperatures.

However, the number of people who suffered these diseases over the last two months of last year was down in 15 provinces - at just 18,760 compared to 21,494 in the same period in 2009.

The temperature in Bangkok dropped by one or two degrees Celsius yesterday, according to the Meteorological Department.

In the capital, the mercury ranged between 17 and 19 degrees Celsius during the coolest moments.

The weather bureau said cold weather and strong winds blanketed many parts of the country under the influence of a high-pressure ridge hovering over the upper part of the country and the South China Sea. In the North, frozen dew could be seen on mountains.

In the Northeast, the minimum temperature fluctuated between 10 and 13 degrees Celsius.

In the northeastern province of Loei, the mercury dropped below 0 degrees Celsius in Phu Rua district yesterday morning. The district chief Thanapon Jantornnimi said the cold weather drawn many tourists.

But many of locals needed more warm clothes during the winter, Thanapon said.

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, meanwhile, has warned people in southern provinces to beware of monsoon conditions.

"Small fishing trawlers should avoid going out to sea in the Gulf of Thailand," the department's director general Wiboon Sanguanpong said.

Winds would be strong till Thursday, he warned.

Wiboon said people needing help in strong winds or rough sea conditions could call 1784 around the clock.

This is the fourth such brief cold spell this winter. The last couple of days seem to be the topper - bladdy cold yesterday morn {12c}. Already it has passed, back to "normal" wintry weather.

So two people have died, possibly related to the cold weather, but..

3,500 fewer people have died due to related illnesses. More shit reporting by the Nation.

    Thais Reel Under Cold

    UPDATE : 19 January 2011

Provinces in the North and Northeastern regions continue to reel under an intense cold wave, with the mercury dropping below the two digit mark in some areas.

Uthaithani province has reportedly been blanketed by fog for the past couple of days, reducing traffic visibility in the morning to less than 100 meters.

Some hill tribes in Huay Khot and Ban Rai districts said they have sat by fires over the past few months to deal with the cold weather, as the areas have recorded below 10 degrees Celsius temperatures on some days.

Jasmine growers in the central province of Nakhon Sawan disclosed that production, normally sold at 800 to 1,000 baht per kilogram, has dropped from nearly 10 kilograms a day to less than one kilogram.

Fighting cock farmers in the Northeastern province of Surin have complained that their poultry has become full and has even refused to eat, forcing them to provide medicine and mosquito nets to manage the cold conditions.

They said the animals can be sold at 1,000 baht to 10,000 baht.

Kalasin province Public Health Officer Phisit Ue-wongkul has warned that those who sit by fires for warmth should be very careful, as they could suffer respiratory related ailments due to excessive smoke inhalation.

Statistics indicate that 600 patients suffering from respiratory diseases have been reported each day over the past few weeks.

Meanwhile, many who eat out have turned to buffet grills to enjoy the heat as they grill meat on charcoal braziers.

...it's now been relegated to the north and higher altitudes. It passes in a couple of days, as it has even in the "Isaan" south. Yesterday was better, today is lovely.
