40 Taiwanese servicemen duped after applying to work as gigolos

Taipei - The Taiwan Defence Ministry attempted to save face Saturday after a newspaper reported that over 40 servicemen had been cheated by a fraud ring after applying to work as gigolos.

The men had answered a job advertisement for a male PR officer, a euphemism for gigolo, according to the United Evening News.

They had then paid between 200,000-600,000 Taiwan dollars (6,600- 20,000 US dollars) in fees to receive training in manners, communication skills and erotic dancing.

But they were then told they lacked the talent or were not suitable for the job and the fee was not returned, the paper wrote.

'This incident shows that military personnel are not aware of the ever-changing tactics of fraud rings,' a Defence Ministry spokesman Yu Sy-tue told reporters. 'We will reinforce education on legal matters and teach the servicemen the correct way to make money.'
