Bangchak President: Explosion and Fire at Refinery Under Control
UPDATE : 14 January 2011
A fire broke out after an explosion went off at an oil refinery of Bangchak Patroleum on Soi Sukhumvit 64 earlier this morning.
Bangchak President said the fire is now under control and that it will not affect output.
Bangchak Petroleum President Dr. Anusorn Saengnimnuan said the fire that broke out at around 7 A.M. this morning was the result of a leak in a pipe.
He said emergency staff were able to get the fire under control within 30 minutes, as they had been drilled to prepare for such accidents.
Five fire trucks were reportedly on the scene.
Dr. Anusorn said the refinery was due for an inspection in the next two months, but that the company will go ahead with the inspection after the accident forced operations to be halted immediately.
The Bangchak president said the accident will not affect the company's refining process nor its output, as the company has reserves to accommodate shortages.
He said the accident had not damaged the plant's storage.
Dr. Anusorn said damages have not been estimated as a thorough investigation is required.
He said he understood that the explosion had caused a lot of panic for residents nearby as the refinery is quite large and is adjacent to a large gas separation plant belonging to PTT, which could have been catastrophic had the accident spread.
