Bangchak President: Explosion and Fire at Refinery Under Control

    UPDATE : 14 January 2011

A fire broke out after an explosion went off at an oil refinery of Bangchak Patroleum on Soi Sukhumvit 64 earlier this morning.

Bangchak President said the fire is now under control and that it will not affect output.

Bangchak Petroleum President Dr. Anusorn Saengnimnuan said the fire that broke out at around 7 A.M. this morning was the result of a leak in a pipe.

He said emergency staff were able to get the fire under control within 30 minutes, as they had been drilled to prepare for such accidents.

Five fire trucks were reportedly on the scene.

Dr. Anusorn said the refinery was due for an inspection in the next two months, but that the company will go ahead with the inspection after the accident forced operations to be halted immediately.

The Bangchak president said the accident will not affect the company's refining process nor its output, as the company has reserves to accommodate shortages.

He said the accident had not damaged the plant's storage.

Dr. Anusorn said damages have not been estimated as a thorough investigation is required.

He said he understood that the explosion had caused a lot of panic for residents nearby as the refinery is quite large and is adjacent to a large gas separation plant belonging to PTT, which could have been catastrophic had the accident spread.

    Bangchak fire affects Q1 revenue

    • Online news:

A fire broke out at a production unit of a refinery of Bangchak Petroleum Plc in Sukhumvit Soi 64 on Friday morning, causing damage which may cut the oil firm's earnings in the first quarter of 2011 by about 30 million baht, BCP President Anusorn Sangnimnuan said.

The fire occurred at about 7am at a diesel production unit with a capacity of 25,000 barrels per day, initially believed to have been caused by an oxygen leak.

Fire engines and chemicals were immediately dispatched into the refinery. The fire was brought under control in 30 minutes.

Nobody was hurt. The fire did not cause damage to or disrupt other production units, which are still in the condition to continue with their operation.

Mr Anusorn said the company was establishing the cause of the fire and assessing damage made to the production unit.

What happened did not affect the environment and communities around the refinery. Bangchak had sent its staff to explain the incident to the people in the surrounding communites to convince them of safety, he said.

The BCP president said he had ordered the entire refinery to halt its operation for safety reasons. The production unit hit by fire would be thoroughly examined after the temperature had dropped, probably in 10 hours.

If the damage was severe, the original plan to close the unit for repairs for 35 days beginning Feb 24 would be moved forward.

But if the damage was minor, the unit would be repaired right away and put in operation. Other units were expected to resume their operation in one to two days.

He said the incident would not affect the quantity of diesel for sale in the country since the company had in reserve five million barrels of the fuel, enough for two months distribution. The export of fuel would be suspended, and emphasis would be given to domestic sale.

Mr Anusorn said the suspension would likely result in a cut in the first quarter's earnings by about 30 million baht, but insisted that the overall operation of the company would not be affected.
