A TOT phone box outside a mosque was destroyed by an explosion during the early hours of this morning in Pattaya.

Pattaya, 21st November 2010, [PDN]: At 1.00am on November 21, Banglamung Police Investigator Chaiphorn Thongnaphian was notified of an explosion that had destroyed a public phone box in front of Anwaritsun Mosque, Soi Phornpraphanimit 1, Moo6, Nongprue, Banglamung. The officer and his team along with police volunteers went immediately to investigate.

On investigation at the scene, it was found that a blue TOT phone box had its telephone circuit (a thick heat resistant cable) destroyed by a blast.

The coin box which contained around 1,500 baht was damaged and scattered around the area. The local residents were alerted and made aware of the incident in order to prevent any further danger. The telephone pieces were taken as evidence to continue with further examination.

Mrs. Mala Yangyuen [65], a grocery store owner stated that, 2 nights before, she heard the sound of a small bang from the phone box whilst several teenagers were gathered there. She assumed it was the sound of fireworks as did everyone else during the current festivities, so did not bother to look for any other reason for the noise.

However, at 1.00 am, this morning, she was frightened when woken up by a very loud noise that caused her to come out finding the phone box badly damaged and assuming it was caused by an explosive. She then reported it to police.

The Banglamung officer presumed the incident was caused by a teenage gang in order to cause a disturbance the area. It was suggested that the explosives may have been homemade and installed in the phone box by the gang. Luckily no one was hurt in the incident.

Police will continue to investigate the incident in order to find the suspects and bring them in for judicial proceedings.
