Ban on sales of red souvenirs lifted
    • Published: 26/11/2010 at 03:09 PM
    • Online news: Politics

The Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) on Friday resolved to lift a ban on sales of red-shirt protest souvenirs it feared may cause disunity and offend the royal institution.

CRES spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the decision was made at today's meeting chaired by supreme commander Gen Songkitti Jaggabatara, deputy director of the centre.

On Nov 19 the CRES issued an order banning sales of souvenirs, such as T-shirts and flip-flops, reasoning that they could carry messages that could cause disunity and offend the monarchy.

The order was issued ahead of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship rally on Nov 19 to mark six months since the May 19 military crackdown on the red-shirts.

However, there were no violations of the ban or offences against the monarchy during the UDD rally on Nov 19 or the People's Alliance for Democracy rallies on Nov 23-25 to oppose charter amendments.

Therefore, the meeting agreed to lift the ban, which could be re-imposed as necessary, Col Sansern said.

On PAD's plan to rally at parliament on Dec 11, the CRES agreed to assign the metropolitan police to maintain law and order.

The rally is planned to demand the government withdraw memorandums of the Thai-Cambodian Joint Border Commission (JBC) meetings that have been forwarded to parliament for approval.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

CRES revokes ban on sale of rally materials accused of sparking social disharmony

CRES revokes ban on sale of rally materials accused of sparking social disharmony

    วันศุกร์ ที่ 26 พ.ย. 2553

BANGKOK, Nov 26 - Thailand's Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) on Friday lifted the ban on the sale or free distribution of rally materials aimed at sparking disunity in society, while stating the order may be reimposed if products are found to offend the country's revered monarchy.

CRES spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd made remarks after the centre’s Friday meeting which was attended by Supreme Commander Gen Songkitti Jakkabatra, three armed forces chiefs, the national police chief, the secretary-general to the National Security Council and the director of the National Intelligence Agency.

He said intelligence agencies have reported at the meeting that the rally of Red Shirt, the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), on Nov 19 and the three day demonstration at parliament by the yellow-clad People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) have each ended peacefully and no action which offended the monarchy was detected.

"The CRES meeting resolved unanimously to lift the ban on the sale of products which could cause divisiveness." said Col Sansern. "But the order may be reimposed if such action (offending monarchy) is found. However, it depends on the situation."

Col Sansern said the CRES also thanked protest leaders for their cooperation with security agencies which made the protests orderly.

Regarding security during the celebrations of His Majesty the King's birthday, scheduled to be held on Dec 1-9, Col Sansern said the centre has assigned the national police chief to be the main official responsible for maintaining order as well as coordinating with government agencies, which will organise festive events, to gather more details to outline the security plan.

The CRES last Friday issued an order prohibiting the sale or free distribution of politically-oriented materials including shirts, photographs, illustrations and printed texts apparently aimed at sparking disharmony in society.

The order has sparked criticism that the ban may be considered a violation of the people's right to freedom of speech. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva had asked the CRES to review its latest order.

The CRES, however, clarified that the ban did not intend to infringe on people's right but focuses on issues that could offend the monarchy. (MCOT online news)

For those who miss the white knuckle excitement of the previous Junta- such as sending the Thai Bourse into a tailspin with dumb, contradictory statements- welcome Home.

Could this be considered a giant "U" Turn?

Not very long ago the CRES said this government and the nations security was threated by selling "divisive sandals" now this ban has been lifted, what's going to happen to the Baht, National Security and the Thai stock exchange now?

I truely hope Thailand's economy isn't going to ruined by the reintroduction of divisive Flipflops!

They could start by modifying the lese majeste laws, so as to allow a voice to the political opposition. It would be a fine start, whilst not really changing anything. Given you control the media, that is.
    (always a vital consideration).
At least political discourse would then be possible. Give the people the feeling that they have a say in things, without there being any real input - like we have in England & the USA.

They are likely to change them; strengthen them... Movement in the other direction is very very unlikely.

Yes, we don't see too many of those pics these days where the liberated populace celebrated with flowers for the soldiers. Everyone except the PAD and the generals who staged it and made away with the piggy bank seem to think it was a bad idea. It has taken them some time though.

No he didn't SD - that's just more of your subtle bullshit spin.

They (CRES/ISOC Sakdina and their P friend) realized - belatedly - that they'd painted themselves into a corner. There was little choice except to back out of this one as it would prove beyond doubt who's running the country - and running the little puppet show with Topogigio.

    It was nothing special.
My mind is not for rent to any God or Government, There's no hope for your discontent - the changes are permanent!

Surely the logical thing would be for the "yellows" to adopt red as their colour... just usurp the "red" identity... undermine, divide, and conquer... [irony]unless of course the whole "red v yellow" thing is a subversive plot by the NWO to slot Thailand under China's wing[/irony].

^^ TS, ah yes, my old subtle bullshit spin

Because, ya know, I don't have better things to do than spend my time spinning that subtle bullshit...

Just who would I spinning for TS? The farang expat community?

Sometimes you do write the strangest things.

It's simply an opinion, based upon what has happened. I may be wrong, but then again, so might you.....

I believe you are wrong TS. It is not spin. SDs reflexes of automatically taking side of Abhishit is so ingrained in his psyche he doesn't even realize it. I guess the driving force behind it is his abhorrence of Thaksin.

My first impulse after reading his post was to point out that after all that has been posted in the last days about this government, even by himself he still takes side of Abhisit given half a chance. This being a perfect example.

I refrained at that moment from my impuls but now is the time I post it.

Ahhh along comes another intellectual colosus, totally ignoring the reality staring him in the face and instead deferring to paranoid delusion.

Really, you guys are worryingly dumb.

It was just an opinion, okay? Got it yet?

Ya know, a few days back the military introduce this crazy law...Abhisit publicly states it needs changing.

    It is removed.

Maybe, just maybe Abhisit got his way? Do you have any other plausible scenario?

Nah, I just have to be wrong...it must be my Abhisit bias again....

CRES lifts ban on material satirising political elite

CRES lifts ban on material satirising political elite

    By THE NATION
    Published on November 27, 2010

The Centre for Resolution of the Emergency Situation yesterday agreed to lift the ban on satirical items created by protesters to insult the political elite, as CRES spokesman Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnerd said it had found no violators of the regulation - despite reports of arrests.

The authority had prohibited distribution of political material such as rubber sandals with Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's face on them, as such items might create divisions in society. Security officials had the authority to confiscate such items.

However, civic groups criticised the order, saying it violated Thais' basic rights, and claiming such satire would never cause social divides.

The criticism was raised after reported arrests of vendors who sold flip-flops with Abhisit's face on them during red-shirt rallies, including the gathering last week at Bangkok's Ratchaprasong Intersection.

The prime minister urged the CRES to review the order, as it was against freedom of expression.

While such items could be regarded as defamation, they had nothing to do with national security or social order, he said.

However, Sansern said the decision to lift the ban was made because the authority had found nobody was in actual violation of the order, and not because of public opinion or the prime minister's instruction.

"Our intelligence indicates that no such item really exists in the market," he said. "If we find anybody distributing such material, we will issue a new order to ban it again."

Hopefuls of change tend to exaggerate their zest in contemporary times. The quest for a more progressive-type of system has been falling in vain for a number of years, and you are correct to suggest that any such momentum will come any time soon - or the distant future.

Indeed, bizarre isn't it. The excuses for the backpedaling are something to behold. Never heard such garbage before...well, actually that's not entirely true....this is one in a series.
