YALA, Sept 9 – A suspected insurgent shot dead a Yala village defence volunteer before detonating a roadside bomb to ambush security personnel rushing to inspect the scene Thursday morning.

Doromae Tomo, 52, was killed in a shooting attack in the provincial seat of strife-torn Yala province.

As security personnel rushed to the crime scene to investigate Mr Tomo's killing, the insurgent suspect triggered an explosive device placed in a roadside area.

However, the bomb failed to function properly and no one was injured.

Initially, investigators presumed that the suspect intended to use the shooting incident to lure the authorities to a bomb ambush.

The violence occurred while the state of emergency remains in place in the three restive southern border provinces of in Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat.

The Emergency Decree has been enforced in the three provinces since mid-2005 to maintain order and has been regularly extended until the present.

Some 4,200 people have died since insurgency-related incidents escalated in the three southernmost provinces in 2004, with more complicated and more violent attacks coming an unpredictable regularity.
