Two bombs found and defused in Nonthaburi

    By The Nation

The bomb squad could successfully render two homemade bombs safe on Wednesday's night at Nonthaburi, Provincial Police Region 1 said on Thursday.

Police were alerted to the explosive devices - one found at a parking lot of the Mall shopping centre on Ngamwongwan Road and another at the parking lot of the Public Health Ministry.

The two bombs were assembled in a similar manner, each having a timing device and explosives put in a fire extinguisher as shell, police said.

The improvisation of fire extingushers as bombs was detected during the Bangkok unrest in April and May.

Extra Security at Parliament After Last Night's Attacks

    UPDATE : 9 September 2010

The Upper and Lower Houses of the Thai Parliament are meeting today at Parliament House. Extra security can be seen throughout the complex after bomb attacks that took place in Bangkok and it's surrounding areas last night. The move could also be attributed to an incident yesterday, when a man was able to breach the grounds of Parliament and barge into a room where the House Foreign Affairs Committee was holding a session.

Three unexploded bombs were found in Bangkok and surrounding suburbs in just a few hours, one of them in front of a school and one in a shopping mall, police said Thursday.

The first device was discovered under a footbridge outside a school in central Bangkok on Wednesday morning, Major General Prawut Thavornsiri, the national police spokesman, told AFP.

On Wednesday night, two more, each weighing around five kilograms (11 pounds) were found at a shopping mall and in the public health ministry car park in nearby Nonthaburi province, he added. Both were later defused.

The finds follow a series of grenade blasts in recent weeks across Bangkok, which remains under emergency rule following deadly street clashes in April and May during anti-government protests.

On Friday, Thailand put over 460 locations across Bangkok on high alert, sending thousands of police, soldiers and city officials onto the streets in a bid to increase the security presence around the clock.

Royal palaces, key government buildings, power plants and public transport are receiving special protection from the Centre for Resolution of Emergency Situation (CRES), the body set up to monitor security since unrest in April.

Suthep Thaugsuban, deputy prime minister in charge of national security, said he had instructed officials to tighten security again after the three devices were found on Wednesday.

"I have not yet got a detailed report. Officials are investigating but it's quite difficult," he added.

He said a bomb hoax that emerged on the same day on a Thai Airways flight from Bangkok to Los Angeles was not related to incidents in the city.

Same group of people behind bombs
    9/09/2010

The bombs planted at three locations in Bangkok and Nonthaburi on Wednesday were made by the same people, police concluded on Thursday.

Pol Maj Gen Panupong Singhara na Ayutthaya, an adviser to the Royal Thai Police, said he has been assigned by national police chief Wichean Pojphosree to head an investigation into the three cases.

Judging from the components of the explosives and how they were put together, it can be concluded the bombs were made by the same group of people, Pol Maj Gen Panupong said.

At each location, police found three fire extinguishers which were connected to electrical circuits that could be timed for about seven days, he said.

Police believe the people behind the bombs have the intention to cause panic in society, he said,. It was still not clearwhat was the intention of these ill-intentioned people.

    Jatuporn: Bombs a govt ploy
    9/09/2010

Puea Thai MP and red-shirt leader Jatuporn Promphan claims the people behind the three unexploded bombs found in Bangkok and Nonthaburi on Wednesday were just providing an excuse for the govenment to keeping of a state of emergency in place in the capital.

He accused them of inciting unrest to prevent a general election.

The situation is similar to the planting of the grenades which exploded near the King Power duty-free complex in Bangkok, he said.

On Wednesday, police found two bombs in Nonthaburi -- at the Mall's Ngam Wong Wan branch and at the car park of the Public Health Ministry -- and one near Santiratwitthayalai school in Bangkok.

    They were all safely defused.

Suthep: Security alert at government, private offices after three bombs found
    วันพฤหัสบดี ที่ 09 ก.ย. 2553

BANGKOK, Sept 9 - Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban on Thursday said he ordered tightened security at key government offices and private buildings after three explosive devices were found and defused in the capital and neighbouring province of Nonthaburi.

Police said an explosive device was found in front of a Bangkok school Wednesday morning.

Two more were found overnight in a shopping mall and a public health ministry car park in adjacent Nonthaburi province. The bombs were later defused.

Mr Suthep, who supervises national security, said there have been attempts by some anti-government elements to stir up disturbances, adding that he instructed security personnel at public offices and private buildings to become more vigilant.

The deputy prime minister said, however, that the three incidents were neither connected to Wednesday's bomb threat against THAI Airways International flight TG794 from Bangkok to Los Angeles nor the emergency decree which remains in place in Bangkok and six other provinces.

Regarding a police warning that he and Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva might be targeted for assassination, Mr Suthep said he and the prime minister continue to work normally but remain vigilant.

The deputy prime minister also said the he instructed the Centre for Resolution of Emergency Situations (CRES) to closely monitor any activities of the anti-government Red Shirts before their planned September 19 gathering to mark the coup four years ago ousting prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

So far intelligence report indicates no imminent violence, but the police will prepare preventive measures for his consideration on Friday, Mr Suthep said.

The latest unexploded bombs were found in the wake of a series of grenade attacks in the capital which remains under a state of emergency after the deadly red shirt protests ended in May.

Obviously, the Thai establishment press doesn't ignore him. He might be considered a benefactor, less a hindrance.

Best way to keep tourist away is to keep the Baht stong, lots of bus and boat accidents and the odd plane crash. Military crack downs, any other ideas welcome.
Actually sounds like most of this happened last tourist season.
