Suthep: Assassination attempt still a rumor

Suthep: Assassination attempt still a rumor

BANGKOK, 6 September 2010 (NNT) – An assassination rumor plotted against key figures of the Government and national security units is not yet confirmed, according to Deputy Prime Minister for Security Affairs Suthep Thaugsuban.

The Deputy Prime Minister stated that he had ordered intelligence units to seek more information and map out preventive measures to deal with the situation. He said he still could not say anything about the assassination plot.

Mr Suthep speculated that the plot might be real but was leaked, or might be just a rumor; however, he confirmed that the Government would stay alert to this issue. He said so far there had been no reports to verify the matter.

The rumor is spreading that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, Mr Suthep himself, as well as Bhumjaithai de facto leader Newin Chidchob, Army Chief General Anupong Paochinda, and Department of Special Investigation Tharit Pengdit were all on the list of assassination targets.

Asked if the emergency rule should be extended or not, the Deputy Prime Minister responded that the Government would monitor and assess the situation according to actual conditions, without taking into account any unconfirmed reports. He said the security law could be cancelled whenever the situation allows normal laws to be enforced.

Meanwhile, Opposition Pheu Thai Party Spokesperson Prompong Nopparit denounced the assassination plot. He then condemned the Government for failing to oversee the situation because unrest incidents were still instigated in areas with the state of emergency enforcement.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

High security for PM, Suthep, Newin
    8/09/2010

Special branch police have been ordered to step up security for Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, his deputy Suthep Thaugsuban and Newin Chidchob of the Bhumjaithai Party on receiving reports of plots to assassinate important persons with war weapons, Pol Lt-Gen Treetos Ronrithiwichai said on Wednesday.

The Special Branch police chief said intelligence agencies had also sent a warning to security units providing security for important persons to be on high alert.

He also said special branch police are keeping closer watch on United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship members who have stepped up activities in Chiang Mai.

Suthep confirms possible assassination attempt rumor
    Rungkarn Rujiwarangkul

BANGKOK, 9 September 2010 (NNT) – Deputy Prime Minister for Security Affairs Suthep Thaugsuban admits receiving there are reports of possible assassination to be attempted on important figures but no report of anticipating violence in the upcoming opposition rallies during the upcoming red-shirt rallies on 19 September.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep said he has instructed the police to tighten security although there has been no concrete information from intelligence agency on violence that may occur during the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship’s (UDD) demonstration. Meanwhile, the authorities have already assigned officers to guard the public figures who reportedly have been targeted for assassination.

The UDD has announced to stage their rallies in Bangkok and Chiang Mai on 19 September to mark the 4th anniversary of the 2006 military coup.

Regarding the assassination attempt, the authorities have already assigned officers to guard the public figures who reportedly have been targeted for assassination. The killing attempt rumor was earlier unveiled by Special Security Police Commander Police Major General Treetot Ronnaritthichai before it was confirmed by the deputy prime minister.

Deputy Prime Minister voiced a concern about the Police Major General’s press release of sensitive information as this which could cause panic to the public but admitted receiving such report as well.

Newin not worried by threat Newin Chidchob, known to be a leading figure behind the Bhumjaithai Party, on Friday shrugged off intelligence agencies warnings that he is a target for assassination, saying he is not worried.

Mr Newin said he had learned of the assassination threats against him and other leading political figures including Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

"I am not worried. Whatever will happen, will happen," he said.

He declined to comment on Puea Thai's reconciliation plan, saying deeds, not words, would prove everything.

Asked about speculation that Pol Gen Kowit Wattana would become the new leader of the Puea Thai Party, Mr Newin said it would be good for Puea Thai if this was true.

The former police chief is a good man and there is no doubt about his loyalty to the monarchy.

However, Mr Newin was concerned that Pol Gen Kowit, being a good man, could face a similar end to the late Samak Sundaravej, a former prime minister and leader of the dissolved People Power Party. He would not elaborate.

He said it was not easy to be in politics, especially to thoroughly take care of Puea Thai members.

Asked about a report of nine former Thai Rak Thai executives forming a new party, Mr Newin said he did not know anything about it.

The banned politican stressed that he had no plans to return to take up any political post.

Thaksin needs to be alive - that's why he's cruising the world with no worries. He knows it. Otherwise the yanks would have already bumped him off as a favour to their yellow buddies.

Indeed. Rather convenient and delightful that the shear existence of the Thaksin figure might be beneficial for all parties. Weaving webs of deception and misdirection is a function that everyone enjoys......TS, love your casual mention of the American factor. That might have been dismissed some years ago as conspiracy, but has legitimacy nonetheless.

So shortly you're going to start claiming that Thaksin is an agent of the government, a bit like Osama Bin Laden is actually a US agent?

PM admits intelligence agencies warn govt of assassination plans

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva Tuesday admitted that intelligence agencies have warned the government of assassination plans against important persons.

He said the warning was made now and "and we have to be careful".

The prime minister was commenting on an interview of First Army Region Commander Lt Gen Kanit Sapithak that there were assassination attempts against certain VIPs.

Abhisit may well have to worry - some reds would probably like to get at him, but he's probably as much at risk of the shady people who run the country behind the scenes. They could wack him and blame it on the reds.. then another coup sweeps the land to restore 'order' from the chaos.. It's conceivable. Much as I think he's a willing puppet of an evil system - I hope he stays safe.

Suthep brushes aside assassination rumor : National News Bureau of Thailand

    Suthep brushes aside assassination rumor

BANGKOK, 15 September 2010 (NNT) – Deputy Prime Minister for Security Affairs Suthep Thaugsuban has reaffirmed that the National Intelligence Agency has never presented a report on assassination attempts against national key figures.

Mr Suthep dismissed the news about assassination plots earlier exposed by ruling Democrat Party Deputy Spokesperson MD Warong Dechakitwikrom. He said special caution must be taken prior to giving such a comment to prevent panic.

As for security protection for Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, the Deputy Prime Minister responded that all measures would remain the same.

Citing an intelligence report claimed to be made by the National Intelligence Agency, MD Warong recently disclosed that a group of people were sent abroad to receive assassin trainings targeted on key figures of the Government. He, however, refused to reveal the country of training and the news source.

Anytime one of these fellas is under pressure or unpopular, they cite opaque "assassination plots" as a ruse to milk public sympathy or escape scrutiny. Utter bullshyte.

Applies equally, Thaksin did this more than once also.

No I don't think that was the case. There was someone charged with the car bombing I recall - but I forget what happened - wasn't Seh Daeng.

Don't recall if anyone got tried for it, anyway. Macchiavellian Thakky wrote the book on a lot of deeds that the current junta are aping.

That would be Pallop Pinmanee, Deputy Director of the ISOC at that time (August 2006). He was fired when his driver was found to be driving around Thaksin's house with what was purported to be a good sized bomb. Supposdly there were several senior Army people involved, but no proof was ever found.

Thaksin used this as an excuse to change the annual military re-shuffle to put his classmates in key positions. Many people thought the plot was faked by Thaksin and the CSD to make the military look bad. When the Army went to the CSD office during the night of the coup, the file had disappeared.

Pallop is now a Pheu Thai Party member and is suspected to one of the leaders of the armed UDD element and he also predicted several times the protest would end in violence. Some may recall he is the one that said Thaksin was forming a "People's Army" with Chavilit Yongchaiyuth as commander.

Thailand : Suthep confirms traces of black-clad suspects near PM’s house

Suthep confirms traces of black-clad suspects near PM’s house
    Sarun Saelee

BANGKOK, 16 September 2010 (NNT) – Black-clad terrorist suspects really rented an apartment near Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's residence in Sukhumvit, Bangkok but they have already moved out from the place, according to Deputy Prime Minister for Security Affairs Suthep Thaugsuban.

Mr Suthep confirmed the black-clad terrorist suspects issue recently reported by Metropolitan Police Chief Police General Santhan Chayanont. He, however, noted that related authorities had been assigned to investigate immediately but found out that they had already left their den.

The Deputy Prime Minister continued that related officers were monitoring movements of those ill-intentioned people closely while security measures to shield Prime Minister Abhisit from assassination attempts would be tightened.

Mr Suthep, nonetheless, shrugged off any necessity to arrange safe houses for key figures and politicians targeted in the assassination plot, especially during the gathering of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) from 17 to 19 September 2010.

The anti-government UDD plans to hold its symbolic political activities to commemorate the fourth anniversary of 19 Sep Coup d’état in many provinces across Thailand, including the capital city.
