Catholic school teacher filmed caning students in Nakhon Ratchasima

SECRETLY recorded mobile phone footage has exposed a teacher at a Catholic boarding school in northeastern Thailand who whacked dozens of students on the buttocks with a cane wrapped with electrical wire.

Art teacher Somchai Limthanmaporn was fired after he was exposed hitting at least 40 students, according to Nongkran Prathumtri, an administrator at St Mary's School in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima. She said the school would not defend him.

Footage of last week's canings was aired yesterday on Thai television.

Parents of the students at St Mary's have already filed complaints with police over the beatings, meted out as punishment to students who failed to clean their living quarters.

Only 1 strike ! jezus I remember getting two lots of 6 in one day and a lot harder than that as one of the cane masters was Dennis Young, a built like brick shithouse all black.
I couldn't ride my bike home that day.

I was the only "non mick" in the boat crew and from what my mates told me this would have been light punishment compared to the hand outs the Brothers liked to inflict - not to mention a few infamous Sisters as well ?

high school i went to used leather strap (six being the maximum at any one time, in front of morning school assembly) rather than cane, we got off lightly compared to some; my cousin was at a boarding school in the same city, their 'offences' during the week were tallied up and they were caned on the buttocks after showers each Sunday evening, in their underwear.

I'm unsure if the teacher was similarly dressed . . .

He was probably fired for being dumb enough to get caught, not for doing what Catholic schools have done for hundreds of years.

I recall getting the strap and cane too. Doesn't make it right though.

I also recall the humiliation and rage I felt at this unjust punishment.

If you grew up with being hit and condone it fine by me. But if somebody hit one of my kids I would get the driver out of my golf bag and head for the school.

I would hazard a guess that there were some students queuing up for this thinking that it would get them a certain pass grade if not at least a B+!!!!

Might try it myself!!!!! just gotta get a Uni' job 1st....Mmmmm Uni' birds....

I must admit his back swing could have been improved.....but he did seem to get a good swing!!!!

serves them right for going to a Catholic school....parents should know better..

got the skin strapped off me at school didn't do me any harm kids need to harden up take some responsibility that's why there is so much wrong with society today they get it to easy and know they can stuff up and there are no consequences.and i didnt get molested by the brothers i don't think they found me attractive who would have guessed.

Now generally i reckon there would not be too many here who were not given the'CUTS' at school..and if you turn your mind back to why you got the cane you would remember..they did,nt do it for nothing..i deserved the cane each and every time, i certainly remember it pulled my head in..and more than likely helped me to be the fine upstanding citizen that i am today..

Being in my thirties, I did not receive any corporal punishment at school.

I blame the lack of corporal punishment for my malingering ways, and one of the main reasons why I ended up in Thailand using cheap Asian prostitutes in my mid twenties.

Yep got the cane at primary school and the strap (leather) at early high school. Thinking back I got the cane quite regularly in grade 6 at primary school by a male teacher who chain smoked in class and who always had the windows open so when he finished his cigarette he would flick it out the middle window to always land in a cement storm water gulley trap outside the window.....estimated distance of the ciggy flick would be approx. 15 metres....bloody clever act, would have been a gun at darts. I started smoking myself about that time in life...wonder if the passive smoking element was a factor in getting me started
