Boredom, availability lead to 2nd wives: survey

    By The Nation
    Published on December 7, 2010

Most husbands took on minor wives because other women were readily available and they got tired of their first wife "going to pot and nagging them all the time," according to researchers from Ramathibodi Hospital.

They urged the civil service system to identify male officials' marital status so they couldn't fool women into becoming their minor wives.

As part of a domestic violence study, a survey was conducted from 20092010 on state officials' attitudes towards men possessing minor wives, Ronnachai Khongsakol, deputy dean of the medical school, said on Sunday.

    Altogether 1,573 officials - 884 women and 689 men - were interviewed.

The main reason for philandering cited by the male respondents was opportunities and close proximity to other women at 58.2 per cent. Other reasons were getting bored with their wife due to overfamiliarity from living together for a long time (48.2 per cent), the wife's behaviour such as drinking, gambling, nagging or being aggressive (42.7 per cent) and the wife not taking care of her looks and getting fat (42 per cent).

The women said they thought men found minor wives because they were insatiable (77.8 per cent) and they were in a tempting environment surrounded by other women (73.4 per cent).

Almost 60 per cent of the men said having a minor wife was a man's personal business, while only 28.5 per cent mentioned it as an immoral act. About half of the women said it was an immoral act and 39 per cent felt it was a very personal matter.

Ronnachai also offered a suggestion that men's marital status should be identified in household registrations and as a requirement in civil service regulations to avoid such issues.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

Is there actually a difference between a "minor wife" and a mistress?

keeping a second wife seems a lot like keeping a second car; a Porsche to drive when you are not in the mood for the Mercedes. In both cases, wouldn't it be cheaper to just grab a rental when the need or urge arises? The rental would also be much cheaper in the long run and provide better variety.

And the thrill of the search.

A man and a woman stand at the altar with the best man and the maid of honour.
Both the man and the woman are beaming with joy.

The best man turns to the man and says "You look really happy"
He replies, "yes I,ve just had the best ever blow job off the most beautiful woman in the world and now I'm about to marry her".

The maid of honour then turns to the bride and also says "You look joyous"
"yes" she says "Ive just given my last ever blow job".
Falling asleep and waking up is not the same as passing out and coming to.

My studies show it is because Thai men are unscrupulous, licentious scumbags, with no moral compass, little concern for the female of the species, poor character and a willingness to over-imbibe alcohol but little tolerance of it.

Didn't you brand all Thai women as whores in another thread?

Why on Earth would you choose to live here for nearly a decade of your life (serious question)?

Yeah its rare that I ever hear a thai woman have anything good to say about their men, and I'm not just talking about bar girls relating "why I like farang" stories. Seems to me that the women are doing all the hard work.

This is an interesting question, I wish someone who understands Thai culture would answer it. Does a minor wife have any expectation of permanence?

Not an expert, but I believe not in the long term. Being a mia noi is more permanent than a fling/occasional lover/gik, and there is generally an expectation of regular material support while the relationship lasts.

No such thing as a divorce from mia noi, and I doubt many women remain in that status into old age.

The purpose of a "minor wife" (as opposed to just having some on the side) is to improve permanence of marriage, once the man is no longer sexually satisfied with his wife. Traditionally, the "major wife" silently accepts the arrangement (as long as it's not rubbed in her face), in order to maintain the marriage.

The mistress/minor wife thing exists in most cultures to varying degrees depending on the gap between rich and poor. A bloke can only afford so many wives.

But its a thing that traditionally is handled with discretion and not talked about openly in monogamous cultures. All the same, everyone knows it exists, especially in Asia. It all comes back to the losing face thing. So long as wify number one gets unlimited access to hubbys loot and is never embarrassed by hubbies extramarital excursions there is no problem with it. Effectively it doesnt exist if there is no confrontation and it doesnt cause any adverse consequences for either party.

Western culture tends to judge these things on a fundamental set of moral/social values. Asian culture tends to judge these things more on the consequences for the individual.
Thai women can be among the most jealous and possessive of any culture, yet if their mans activities have no consequences for them, they really dont want to know about it.

Not so sure that the Thai culture dictates wife number 1 accepts the fact that wife #2 exists. Heard too many stories of husbands being tossed out on their ear due to their extramarrital affairs. These husbands are both Thai and farang, so no diffferent than the west. I think it just depends on the individual tolerance level of wife #1 like all other cultures. To me it makes a lot more sense to have a little fling and then move on without ever letting wife #1 know. All done on the QT and nobody gets upset.
Having more than one wife only seems to work for muslims and mormons..........

Being the 'kept woman' type of mia noi- as opposed to the more public 'second wife' version isn't a bad life in Isaan really. We've got a couple in the village. Obviously they've got to be ready, willing and able when the Wallet wants a shag, but apart from that they live a pretty ez life, decent house, some money in pocket, bugger all else to do.
