The Royal Thai Police Board selected Pol Gen Wichean Potephosree to be the next national police chief at its meeting on Monday, Thepthai Senpong, the prime minister's personal spokesman, said.
It was a unanimous vote, according to Mr Thepthai.
Mr Abhisit, who proposed Pol Gen Wichean's name, refrained from voting. Justice Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga was absent.
The Royal Thai Police Board consists of 11 members.
