Bomb Attack in Area Near King Power Duty Free

    UPDATE : 30 July 2010 At around 1:30 A.M.

last night, authorities were informed that a bomb had exploded at a building directly across the King Power Duty Free Complex on Soi Rangnam in the Phayathai area, injuring one person. On site, police found a man around 30 to 40 years old who had been seriously injured from bomb shrapnel. Near the victim was a hold in the ground at the foot of a tree with shrapnel and remains of a black plastic bag.

Witnesses in the area say they saw a green and yellow taxi parked near the tree before the explosion took place. However, the taxi sped away right after the bomb exploded. Witnesses did not get a chance to notice the license plate on the vehicle.

After an initial investigation of the crime scene, authorities believe that the explosive used in the attack was a stick hand grenade which was planted around the tree trunk in a black plastic bag. The victim is believed to be a garbage collector who intended to look inside the plastic bag, which triggered the bomb to explode.

The victim was transported to Ratchavitee Hospital and remains in critical condition. As of 8:30 A.M. on Friday morning, he has not regained consciousness.

The blast comes on the heels of the government's decision to cancel the State of Emergency in six provinces. Ten provinces, including the capital of Bangkok and its metropolitan areas, remain under emergency decree.

Okay, so we have a second bomb. So what's the reasoning behind this one? Any decrees need lengthening?

Another story that doesn't add up.

A taxi is implicated (e.g. "reds"). The taxi is spotted next to the tree where the grenade explodes. It speeds off AFTER the explosion. Don't think so.

BBC News - Thai grenade blast injures one in Bangkok

30 July 2010 Last updated at 03:56 GMT Thai grenade blast injures one in Bangkok

The state of emergency remains in place in the protest-hit capital, Bangkok

A grenade has exploded in the Thai capital Bangkok, police say, leaving one man seriously injured and raising fears of further civil unrest.

It comes after a fatal blast five days ago and violent anti-government protests in April and May.

Police said the grenade, tied with a rubber band and wrapped in a plastic bag, was left in a public bin.

The man who found it sustained injuries all over his body and is now being treated in hospital.

"I do not want to speculate on the cause at this point and whether it is politically motivated or an attempt to stir chaos," Lt Gen Santarn Chayanond of the Metropolitan Police told the Reuters news agency.

    State of emergency

Last Sunday a small bomb exploded at a bus stop in Bangkok, killing one person and injuring 10 others.

That blast occurred in an area occupied by "red-shirt" anti-government protesters for weeks until a crackdown by the security forces in May.

So far, no group has said it carried out either attack.

Earlier this week, the Thai authorities lifted a state of emergency in six provinces but kept it in place in 10 others, including Bangkok.

Around 90 people died and 1,800 were injured during the confrontation between the "red shirts" and the security forces.

This will become more and more common in the future months. It will become an everyday event in Bangkok, just like it is in the deep South. It will be little surprise when a large bomb goes of in a tourist area, bar/market etc like in Bali. It will happen, it's just a matter of when. People will pretend to be shocked when half a dozen white people are killed by a bomb in a bar or eatery in downtown Bangkok, but it should come as no surprise when it happens.

Bangkok Post : Suthep: Blast intended to discredit govt

Suthep: Blast intended to discredit govt

The grenade blast in the heart of Bangkok early Friday morning was clearly an attempt to discredit the government, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said.

The grenade, which was put in a plastic rubbish bag and dropped on a pile of garbage in front of a house in Rang Nam Road opposite the King Power duty-free shopping centre, went off about 1.30am.

Pol Maj-Gen Wichai Sangprapai, chief of Metropolitan Police Division 1, said that the pin of the grenade was removed and a rubber band used to hold the trigger handle closed.

The explosion seriously injured a man in his 30s who was scavenging. He has not yet been identified.

Mr Suthep, director of the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation, said the explosion was clearly intended to discredit the government.

"It is deplorable that some people have the intention of causing chaos just to make people believe that the government is not able to keep the situation in control," he said.

Mr Suthep said that in the CRES meeting on Thursday he assigned the Royal Thai Police Office to join force with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, civil defence volunteer units, and military police of the three armed forces to beef up security in the capital after a bomb went off in front of the Big C department store on Ratchadamri road on July 25.

The deputy prime minister in charge of security affairs said he was not satisfied with the work of intelligence agencies and that he raised this with Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon at the CRES meeting.

He said Bangkok and nearby provinces are still vulnerable to violence. This was why the government has to keep the emergency decree in force in these provinces.

Bangkok and nine other provinces are still under the state of emergency. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Thursday signed an order to lift the emergency decree in six other provinces.

Bangkok Post : Gen Prawit calls an urgent meeting

Gen Prawit calls an urgent meeting

Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon on Friday morning called an urgent meeting of security and intelligence units to discuss the overall situation following the bombing in Soi Rang Nam early this morning, reports said.

“The meeting is for discussion and assessment of the current situation. I want to know what each of the security and intelligence units is doing or responsible for, and how they can effectively maintain peace and order.

“I wante to assure the Thai people that the government is capable of keeping the situation under control,” Gen Prawit said.

The defence minister said the intelligence agences were all doing their jobs well. There was no need for big changes.

Asked about the Soi Rang Nam bombing this morning, Gen Prawit admitted that he was concerned the situation would escalate. He affirmed that the government is not at ease and will put all its efforts into ensuring national security.

Asked who are behind the bomb attacks in the capital, the minister admitted he had no idea, but he felt there are some people who do not want the country to be at peace. He did not know whether the bomb attacks are politically motivated.

That would be the Government, waging a relentless campaign against any form of opposition.

There is a 7-11 across from King Power. Very often (especially late at night / early morning), there's a taxi or two parked in the area. The fact that one might have been there, and that it drove off after the explosion is not the least bit unusual. Generally, people do tend to run away from bombs.

If a grenade exploded right next to a taxi, it wouldn't be speeding off anywhere right "after" the blast.
Not quite as reported TS, the witness's state that they saw a taxi parked NEAR the tree and following the explosion the vehicle was driven off.

This may be the first and only lead that the police have in the initial stages of the investigation and a request for any taxi drivers who were parked in the vicinity during that period to contact them may produce results. After all, if one heard a loud explosion in close proximity of where one was parked at night it is unlikely to be forgotten easily. Many members of the public would have unwittingly investigated the explosion and not have driven off.

If none come forward then it becomes more likely that the driver of the said taxi may be implicated in the incident. It is also commonplace for the perpetrator of a such a crime to wish to see the effects at the time of the explosion or return to the scene shortly after. Much the same as arson.

Went along Rang Nam for lunch today and took a gander at said tree. It took a fair ol' blast. Ripped the husk off most of it, and burnt right up into the upper branches 20-30 feet off the ground.

If they really want to up the anti all they have to do is set off a big bastard on Kao San road. That would be the end of tourism for backpackers for a fair while.

One that was presumably in the vicinity but had no involvement in the incident.

On the other hand finding a Bangkok taxi driver of sound mind may prove a trifle difficult
