Tourist Visas to be extended from 30 to 90 days

this from Tourism and Sports Minister Chumpol Silpa-archa

The incentives, introduced in January 2009 and due to expire in March this year, would be extended until year-end, while waivers of visa fees will be extended until March 2011. Other incentives include waivers on landing fees and an extension of foreign visitors' visas for tourism purposes to 90 days from 30 days.

90 days on entry, wouldn't that be lovely!

I'll delay my celebrations untill I hear something more concrete though.

What would be the point of applying for a tourist visa if you could get 90 days on arrival? Something doesn't sound right.....

The wording sounds like a tourist visa will get you a stay of 90days instead of 60 days.

Like it used to be a few years back

an extension of foreign visitors' visas for tourism purposes to 90 days from 30 days.
    reeks of bollox.

Tourist visas aren't for 30 days, which kind of questions the whole thing really.

Unless they're on about extending the extension available, which is 30 days.

But as the visa is only for 60 days, it would make the extension longer than the actual visa.

Just reading up on this Tourism Minister.

He also declared that Tourist visas would be free from April 1st 2010 to March 2011. As they were for the previous year.

Tourism stimulus measures extended : National News Bureau of Thailand

So far not one embassy or consulate has been informed and not one free tourist visa has been issued.

Just reading the thread about it on TV. People applying all over the world and not one embassy has been informed.

Highlights the competency and honesty of Thai government officials quite nicely I feel.

BANGKOK, 15 April 2010 (NNT) – The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has extended tourism stimulus measures for one year until 31 March 2011

The stimulus measures include the exemption of visa fees for foreign tourists

Call me cynical but I don't see how extending the visa free entry stamp from 30 to 90 days would encourage more tourists. 30 days is usually more than sufficient for bonafide tourists that are actually on holiday. Only real benefit will be for backpackers and they are the lowest spenders and of course for the expats that stay perennially on tourist visas and they are going to be here anyway.
Tourists get a visa-free stamp on entry and that is enough for people to come here. If they want to stay longer they can apply for a visa and extend giving them 90 days already.

Thailand is obviously feeling the fallout but I would suggest it is rather more to do with the strength of the Baht, the global recession and Thailand's comparatively high prices for retail goods. The ongoing protests will factor of course.

Difficult time for the tourism sector and there's no end in sight.

On a more selfish note I just booked a beautiful villa with private pool in Phuket for less than a 1/4 of the normal rate for a little romantic break next month so I hope the fuckers stay away and there will be plenty of bargains to be had.

I think it will only be embassies issueing free tourist visas, the consulates won't be going for that.

Here you have a government spokesperson confirming free Tourist Visas from April 1st way back on the 2nd of March.

Thailand Voice | Thailand Tourist Visa?s Free Again

    Posted on March 02, 2010

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports have asked the government to extend the tourism stimulus measures for another year and yesterday deputy government spokesman Watchara Kannika confirmed that the the measures will be extended from April 1, 2010 and go through to March 31, 2011.
Wonder why on April 21st tourists all over the world are still being charged.

I think the extension from 30 to 90 is refering to how many fu*king minutes it will take to get through immigration on the way in and out of Thailand

At not all passport holders are given 30 days, Brazilians for example get 90 days on arrival, even at land crossings.

Thai authorities know it takes longer than that to get your money back on 10 kilos.

No point in inconveniencing the mules with a visa run.
