God, I'm so helpful, even to people like Dot com who screech like babies when someone politely mentions they have just given incorrect information.

so here is a pic of the new Rail link as it makes it's way across the end of thong lor.

And you can see from this pic that there is no station there.

You can see the hospital, or at least I think it is, remember I'm a knobend who doesn't know where that hospital is.

To the left of the hospital you can see the line that branches off to take the trains down into the depot, the roof of which you can see on the right side of the pic below the level of the elevated railway.

Doubtless dot com won't apologise for his groundless attack, in fact i doubt he'll be around this thread again, anything rather that admit being wrong. And some say it's only thai's who suffer from this childish loss of face thingy....

300 pieces all over the place, some may even make it to the airport!

Transport Ministry to open airport rail link in dealing with the rally
    Panita Norasing

BANGKOK, 10 March 2010 (NNT) – The Ministry of Transport consults relevant agencies to set a reserve transportation plan along with an opening of the Airport Rail Link in mobilizing passengers from urban areas to the airport during the rally.

Transport Minister, Sopon Sarum, stated that he would hold a meeting with related agencies on 11 March, to discuss the strategy during the anti-government mass demonstration on 12-14 March. All units would be asked to adjust the transportation services plan.

The Minister said that the police would take care of bus services on dangerous routes and the Airport Rail Link may be opened to facilitate travel to and from Suvarnabhumi Airport and the city.

An administrative center has been set up to facilitate people and to give information and suggestions about the routes in case the streets are blocked by protesters.

Thai State Railway Hires DB International To Operate New Line
    Mar 24, 2010

BANGKOK -(Dow Jones)- The board of State Railway of Thailand Thursday agreed to hire Germany's DB International GMBH to operate and provide maintenance on the new electric rail service linking Suvarnabhumi airport to central Bangkok from April to August for THB239 million ($7.4 million).

The trial period for the 28-kilometer rail line, which will shuttle passengers to and from Bangkok's international airport within 15 minutes, will start in late April while commercial operation is expected to commence in July, SRT Chairman Suphoth Sublom said after the board's meeting.

During the trial period, services will be provided free of charge for three hours in the morning and another three hours in the evening, he said.

The SRT plans for a wholly owned unit to run the rail line when it operates commercially, said Suphoth.

At around 300b in the taxi (door to door) and even in heavy traffic no more than 45/50 mins, I'll stick with the taxi.

When I used to arrive at the old airport I must admit I ve been driven in a couple of mobile three wheeled sheds but its not been that bad arriving at Swampy.

I agree, I will be taking taxis too.

But, they didn't build this thing for us expats. They built it for the million or so people and tourists/businessmen/whore mongers who live and stay in hotels on sukhumvit. And for them, it might just be the simplest/cheapest/fastest way to get there.

Terminal station is 2 min walk to the Phetchaburi MRTA, one more stop takes you to Sukhumvit/Asok.

A shoestring budget backpacker could walk to Sukhumvit from there. To a whore monger its merely a cock stride.

^ there are two terminal stations for different trains. Phaya Thai and Makkasan. Neither near Sukhumvit.

Not to mention how people are going to get to their actual hotels with luggage. Two trains then a taxi?

Makkasan is also further than 2 minutes from Petchburi MRT. A lot further.

Fair enough. I live in Huay Kwang. I pass through Rama 9/Petchaburi/Asok every day, lived here for 5 years. Make up your own mind. If you've seen it with you own eyes I'd suggest you seek a ophthalmologist.

Bully for you, it is still a lot more that 2 minutes on foot though, not to mention with luggage.

Plus you've still got to get on another train, then walk from that train or take a taxi to your hotel if you are in Sukhumvit.

Face it, it will be much easier just to get a taxi from the airport and save the arsing around.

The Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link is up and running… | Move&Blog! Thailand

"The Makkasan station is located at the intersection between Asoke Road and Petchaburi Road. It is near the Petchaburi MRT station, but both stations are not connected. You’ll have to walk and cross the street to reach one from the other".

I agree with you in certain cases a taxi is better. But it horses for courses. Biggest factors will be time of day arriving at the airport (and possible traffic coming off the expressway onto Sukhumvit) of course amount of luggage and number of passenger if in a group.

I will actually be taking a taxi as I don't venture as far as Sukhumvit. If I was going to Sukhumvit I would be happy to take 2 or 3 trains than get stuck getting off that expressway in a taxi as I have experienced on many occasions. The taxi ride can become longer than your flight.

I've had many high speed joyrides in taxis as well going to and from the airport, tail gating other vehicles at less than a meters distance. Doesn't really bother me and a kap cha cha khrap can usually solve that one but when any friends/family visit I will be advising them to take the train.

And at the end of the day its good it will be opening soon and a useful otpion. Even if only 10% of visitors or commuters use this system it is better for the environment and may ease congestion coming into town.

This train link is a lot higher then the BTS and from driving past the stations I have only seen steps, not a great way to travel carting bags up and down. Very inconvenient way to go if your destination was a suk hotel, I think people might try once then go back to taxi or even the bus. Anyway I don't think you are allowed to carry large suitcases on the MRT so you would have to get a taxi to suk anyway.

I agree with Beadle. It's a novelty and great if you live near the stations (or a hotel) but otherwise it's at least one taxi and then the train. Makes little sense given the cost and convenience of the Meter Taxis.

It's possible that one could transfer to the Skytrain at Phaya Thai, but unless your home/hotel is right on the BTS route - few people would put up with all that - it doesn't save much time and isn't much cheaper.

Add in the uncertainty of checking your bags in at Makasan.. Does this mean I get on at Phaya Thai, the alight at Makasan, check my bags in there, get back on the f'ing train - continue to the airport?? Come on..no way and as Crazy Dog says - the Skytrain is not the London Undeground and can you imagine dozens of big farangs and their suitcases and backpacks pusing their way onto the skytrain?

Like most things in Thailand it was conceived simply so that the well-connected families and their extended family businesses could skim money from it. As usual, it wasn't thought through as convenience and logic wasn't the point of building it..
