Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian police have shot dead a wanted Thai national during a car chase, a news report said Thursday.

The 44-year-old man, who had 16 previous criminal convictions for robbery, theft and kidnapping, was believed to be the head of a Thai gang based in the northern state of Penang, said police chief Ayub Yaakob.

Authorities attempted to arrest the man during a raid late Wednesday, but he got into a car and sped off, hitting a motorcyclist and then crashing into a police car, Ayub was quoted as saying by the Star daily.

Police then shot the man dead.

Ayub said the man's car had a false registration number, while a pistol and several bullets were found in the vehicle.

He said a police officer was also slightly injured in the incident.
