Vietnamese couple ran disabled begging ring in Thailand

Vietnamese couple ran disabled begging ring in Thailand
    Jan 12, 2010

Hanoi - A couple has been charged with trafficking disabled Vietnamese people to Thailand and organizing them into a begging ring, an official said Tuesday.

Le Hong Bao, a prosecutor in southern An Giang province, said Lam Minh Hoang, 59, and his wife Nguyen Thi Nga, 53, had been charged with 'organizing other persons to flee abroad illegally.'

The Vietnamese couple met while working in massage parlours in Cambodia in 1995, according to the indictment. In 2003, they migrated illegally to Thailand, where they found that begging was highly profitable.

In 2006, the couple returned to Vietnam, where they recruited 10 disabled people over the course of three years and sent them through Cambodia to Thailand to join a begging ring.

Prosecutors said the couple had rented two houses, and assigned seven of the disabled to beg while three sold trinkets at pagodas and other public places. Each beggar and peddler paid the couple 300 baht (9 dollars) per day, and kept the remainder.

Eight of the beggars fell out with the couple over the sharing of income, and were sent back to Vietnam. Hoang and Nga were arrested in June while returning to Vietnam from Cambodia.

Under Vietnamese law, if found guilty, the couple face between two and seven years in jail.

Well - if true this sounds much better than other begging rings which are not so voluntary and sometimes create disabilities... see Slumdog Millionaire (not just for that, it's a fantastic movie anyway)...

Sharing revenues and providing housing sounds allright to me really.

That depends on "how" they recruited the 10 disabled people. Like in Slumdog Millionaire, the guys mutilating kids on a regular basis probably liken themselves recruiters and wouldn't admit more than that.

I have a difficult time with the beggers in Thailand. There is some guy on Surkumvit that has been crawling between soi 7 and 9 for years. I believe he is missing a leg. When he's in that area he looks terrible, but I've seen him outside of that area and he looks like he does pretty well. I feel bad every time I walk by one of them and can't drop money in their cup, but if I did I would be broke because there are so many.

Don't Buddhists believe having a deformity is karma for negative things you did in a past life?

Buddhists (Thai variety at any rate) believe that if you give someone 10 Baht and they turn around and do something "bad" with that money, you have done bad yourself. Presto-ergo: don't give to the poor!!! Stick money into a monk's paws and you'll be OK chat-na.

    Tight shits.

All this after Danny Boyle set up a fund to help these kids and their families...the money funnily enough isn't getting to the ones that need it....Go figure..as the yanks say...Been copying Thailand too much maybe India...or were you he leaders????

Hey don't knock it I'm off home right now to HOBBLE my daughter and get her farmed out....Life ain't free you know and you'll make way more money than your average Thai....
Then later you can get on the game and support me and your mum...It's the Thai way...The boys get to do worthless jobs and get pissed with their mates, hardly ever giving and cash to the family and the daughter gets to work in a brothel...Lovely Buddhist people aren't they..

Religious people are disabled in the brain. Is that why we give them money?

Ever notice the guy on Sukhumvit that puts ketchup on his clothes to look like he is bleeding. Who falls for that one???
