Khon Kaen - Infection after surgery leaves 7 blind

Infection after surgery leaves 7 blind in Khon Kaen

Up to seven patients have lost sight in one eye while two have been left completely blind after undergoing cataract surgery at the Khon Kaen Hospital. Some 25 patients underwent cataract surgery in the hospital between December 14 and 16.

Soon after the surgery was completed, the eyes of 11 patients were found to be infected. After administering immediate treatment, the hospital sent nine of the affected patients to the Srinagarindra Hospital, also located in Khon Kaen; while one was sent to a hospital in Nakhon Pathom at the request of relatives and one continued receiving treatment at the Khon Kaen Hospital. Of the 11 patients, the eyes of two patients had to be removed, while five lost their eyesight.

So far, four of the 11 patients have recovered satisfactorily, though six have been allowed to go home and the rest are still being treated at the Khon Kaen Hospital.

Thailand is placing itself as the Asian hub of medical tourism, get your cataracts and lasik surgery done here, it's cheaper than the USA.

^ Doesn't matter how cheap it is if you lose your eyesight...

I paid top dollar to have Lasik done in the states as I was concerned over just this sort of thing happening in a banana republic...

How very true that is at this moment.
But when the insurance premiums go up because of medical malpractice claims goes to the amounts paid out in the US then the treatments will also go up in price.
Infectious bacteria/virus can not live in sanitary conditions and Thailand is not world famous for being a very sanitary place, I have been to Dr. Offices and into hospitals here and have seen things that would make the pope puke when it comes to prevention of the spread of bacteria and virus.

I'm quite sure, as you know yourselves (I would hope) that there is a huge difference in quality and treatment quality between what's available in Khon Kaen and, and what a Bangkok hospital like Bumrungrad offers.

If I have stuff done in the US, I don't have it done in BFE in Kansas either.

Yep, I have a friend that has been here now for about 20 years this trip, but they told him they could do an op on his eyes and he would have the sight of a 20 year old and never need glasses again, so he went for it in BKK, then he was damn near blind for a while then they did something else and he can see but is really light sensative and not near the sight that he had before and they said "Gee, thats tough shit ain't it".? and it only cost him 200K.

I had cataract surgery at Rutinin Hospital in Bangkok. It took 80 minutes and two eye doctors took turns maning the laser. No problems at all. The surgical area was cleaner than most I've seen in the U.S. I wouldn't trust my eyes to a U.S. surgeon that probably would have an intern finish the proceedure (like U.S. dentists).

That could be Nedley, but you also have to remember that they knew you at home and here you were a stranger.

But anyway, I had just about made up my mind to go have it done here and now you assholes have changed that too.

Now i am a bit worried. I am in the process of having lasic at Bumrungrad, which appears to be a very clean, modern and efficient hospital. My surgeon is a graduate of Harvard. However this news does make me a little uneasy.
By the way its costing BHT43,000.

Some of the hospitals in Bangkok are better than any in Australia and the US, maybe even the UK.

There are several very good ones but like anywhere, be careful when selecting a place to have your eyes screwed with. The risk of lasic surgery is real no matter where it is done. Rutinin Hospital in Bangkok has a good reputation and if I needed lasic would not hesitate to go there. Took my old mom there a couple of years ago for cataracts and all went extremely well.

Would never consider a Khonkean or any other Isaan hospital though.

We took the wifes mom there for the exact same surgery. Damn she went nuts when the bandages came off and Muay Thai came on. It had happened so slowly she did not really even know what was going on.

3 more patients of Khon Kaen Hospital may turn blind

3 more patients of Khon Kaen Hospital may turn blind

Three more patients are at risk of losing their eyesight due to infections during eye surgeries at the Khon Kaen Hospital.

Earlier, seven other patients have already been blinded in at least one eye for the same reason.

The hospital has now suspected that disposable eye cleaner might have caused the infections, which affected 11 of 25 patients undergoing the surgeries in mid-December.

The hospital's director Dr Weerapan Supanchaimat Wednesday revealed that lab tests on 85 surgical tools and samples of air showed no signs of pathogens.

This may also turn out to be a defective batch of anesthesia, the eye cleaner or some other defective product used during the procedure. Difficult to believe the hospital could suddenly have this many problems if none happened before.
