That's exactly what I thought too and I would love to ask her. I wonder if she had a work permit and was paying tax? Maybe they should investigate this while they have her in the cells, she could get a couple of years.

    Acting stupidly in foreign lands

"English Noodles;1251657" "crazy dog" strange how she could not get another job teaching for a few weeks to buy a ticket home and decided to smuggle heroin instead. "That's exactly what I thought too and I would love to ask her. I wonder if she had a work permit and was paying tax? Maybe they should investigate this while they have her in the cells, she could get a couple of years."

I read this thread with great interest because during the 60's when I was there I started to understand what the phrase "Ugly American" really meant. Thailand or any country other than your own home soil belongs to the natives, their customs, their social conduct, their lives. Not unlike westerners from small towns anywhere else in the world, who ostracize outsiders who happen into their little worlds. One must remember the majority of any population is generally not world traveled, usually under-educated (now worse than ever with the growth of Muslim hordes) and somewhat narrow-minded. Visitors usually don't speak the language, and locals don't speak your native language either. Local customs of deportment are trampled by outsiders even with good intentions so animosity grows for foreigners.

I learned enough language to get along with local society, made friends with local business people and tried to conduct myself with an air of respect toward the locals. Got along very nicely and felt I could have lived there with no problem. But my compatriots (not necessarily my friends) seemed to think we were doing Thailand a great favor and expected to be treated as royal guests, trampling upon local customs and mores. Some got the shit kicked out of themselves with that attitude, some wised up and behaved more as visitors should but some made it hard for all foreigners with their bully attitudes.

This woman and some of the members of this forum belong in the latter class. One must always remember you are a visitor no matter how long you stay. If you have a Thai family you have made some headway but you will never be a Thai..... just tolerated. The same way refugees are treated in your home land.

Enjoy everything, there is much beauty in Thailand and other foreign lands to experience. You won't own it but you can enjoy it.

    IMHO,
    ShilohJim

Reminds me of Wythenshawe in Manchester, anyway I wonder if Sandra had thought of changing her name before trying to get in the country.

    Cheers

NOTE THAT A VISA ENTITLES THE HOLDER TO TRAVEL TO THAILAND AND APPLY FOR ADMISSION TO ENTER THAILAND. THE VISA DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY GUARANTEE ENTRY IN TO THAILAND.
ENTRY IS GRANTED ONLY AT THE DISCRETION OF THE IMMIGRATION OFFICER ON DUTY
AT THE POINT OF ENTRY IN TO THAILAND.

And they do tell you this when you get the visa.
They gave her a visa because she paid for one, for the exact above quoted reason.

Very, very well said -- it would be nice if more of the self-entitled low-lifes around these parts took your words to heart, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

A sense of entitlement usually comes with a low IQ, and that is the biggest problem.

    Green to you!

Thank you, I loved my tour in Thailand. Had every intention of returning after my discharge from the Air Force but I needed to get my A&P license to work for Air America. When I hit Dallas, life was very very good for me, all plans for an immediate return fell by the wayside as round eyed women and juke joints seemed much nicer after a year in the boonies of northern Thailand. Long story short, life got in the way so I never returned though through the years it has been a pleasant memory to recall.

I envy those folks who can pick up and relocate to a foreign land somewhat, though life anywhere is what you make it...... good or bad.

    Are sex-tourists classed as "low-lifes"?

A one way ticket back then would have been about 200 quid so why did she do a drug run for 1000?, just an excuse by a lazy stupid bitch who thought she would get away with it, she could easily have had the airfare sent from her parents. Should have shot her when they had the chance.

^ and ^^. WTF! Have you no compassion? She said she was sorry! She is making a career for herself out of being a former death row prisoner. Give her a chance! She is probably deep down a fine person!

And as for you, Daffy, don't you think it's a bit weird being lectured to by ShilohJim about how to behave as an expat? This is a guy who spent a year or two sitting on a huge American airbase in Northern Thailand over 40 years ago - and by his own statement, has never been back. I would be most interested on where he got this tremendous amount of insight? In Dallas? From his hooch maid 45 years ago? No offense to ShilohJim, but I've been living and working successfully in Asia for 40 years, and reckon I figured it out all on my own by doing it, not by thinking about what might have been.

In any case, it appears that this little soap opera is over since the Thais have already deported her to the Gulf. But, I'm sure she can use these most recent dramatic moments on her next speaking tour. Her story was getting a bit dated, but now she has some updates for her audience. Enjoy life as a professional victim.

    DK,
Those points were formulated during that year. Oh that base was far from plush and the town has really exploded in size and development I suppose but if you've lived and worked in Asia for over 40 years you apparently learned to go with the local flow. Just because I don't live there anymore is no reason why I cannot (or could not) learn to accept local culture as the model for successful co-existance.

I was invited to this site by a friend who lives there now. He seems happy to accept Thai ways but then I may be mis-reading his messages. I find a lot of the contributors to be seemingly nice folks who have chosen to make life away from their native lands for various reasons, hurray for them. Then several others who do nothing but piss and moan about Asian life. Phuck them if they don't like it, move!

I admire the verdant verbiosity of your adjectival sesquapedlian endeavour!
