How can I ever forget Phuket, it was the first time I got Gonerhea, such splendid memories of some overpriced Island, 400baht for some poxy fan room, the beach was on par with Pattaya, ie you didn't go in it unless you wanted more diseases to take home, Gonorhea was enough for me so I didn't go swimming, the dirty diseased skanky whore wanted to come to Pattaya with me, maybe she had heard the medical care was better here, or maybe she thought I would pay to get her VD cleared up, nope Phuket aint the place for me no more.

Been there four times and regretted it each time.

Over pricing for falangs is widespread but in Phuket
they seem to do it in a hateful manner.

For those that have been in Phuket, what beaches would you say were best for major relaxation and not too many people trying to sell you things on the beach. Was once at Kata/Karon and it was nice, but I want to try somewhere else. I'll be going solo and not looking for females. What would the best beach be in rainy season?

    Cheers

A traffic Island in Birmingham would make a higher ranking that Phuket.

    Not very helpful replies.

I have only been there twice but enjoyed it both times and I didn't catch any social diseases.

The sea on the Adaman side is always going to be cleaner than round the mainland side.

If you can get out of Phuket why not go further north to Khao Lak? I drove through in March 2005 and the out and out devastation had been cleared, the beaches were clean and rebuilding had started. I am sure that the locals will be pleased to see you.
    Lord, deliver us from e-mail.

You left the "r" off: The Isle of Wight is nicer. But Phuket is definitely hotter.

Yep. You have to find out where to go, what to do to minimise it... e.g. send the g/f in first to ask price of anything then go in yourself to check the goods and pay: if the price goes up, leave (and tell them why). I've often heard the price of cheap Thai meals go up 10 or 20 baht just because I'm farang. I could pay double or treble, but I won't because it pisses me off.

The beaches aren't safe for swimming now, but if you just want to go to eat or to relax, Karon is my favourite (north end where there are some tsunami survivors selling excellent Thai food just off the beach) or Surin (salas on the beach where you can eat). I never go to Patong beach, but there are some good restaurants near Krung Thai bank open at night time.

I've been several times. If only there was a Big C or Lotus up there, I might seriously think about moving there. I did see several good sized mini-marts so maybe I should look closer. Khao Lak got hit very hard by the tsunami so I'm sure you'd get a warm welcome there.

Phuket at the moment is a complete mess. The electric was off yesterday, AND the water. The water still hasn't come back, so I'm using the stored water in the garden tank, which is OK and will last 3 or 4 days. The main roads are being widened to 4 lanes at the expense of all the shop fronts and gardens and trees and grass... total shambles! I'm sure it will be great when it's finished in about a year, and then we'll have a race-track from the airport all the way to Patong and Chalong and Rawai.

I've got lots of pictures of the mess, perhaps I should start a new thread!

Well, I know this word because it's the same root with "Diarrhea" which I always use for the excuse not to go to work.
