Prasopsuk backs charter proposal
16/07/2009

The proposal by the Committee on Reconciliation, political reform and Constitutional Amendment that six articles of the 2007 charter be urgently rewritten to unify the country has been supported by the senate speaker even though some senators oppose it.

“Article 237 on dissolutionof political parties and stripping party executive members of political rights should be changed because this would lead to the settling of the country’s political conflict,” Senate Speaker Prasopsuk Boondej said on Thursday.

Politicians banned from politics for five years by the court for involvement in political fraud should be pardoned as it was a political offence, not criminal.

He admitted the proposed amendment would benefit politicians, but said it would be a solution to a national problem.

Asked about the group of 40 senators who have strongly opposed amnesty for the banned politicians, Mr Prasopsuk said they had a democratic right to express their views and he was not in a position to stop them.

These differences would be resolved in the parliament.
