Province to spend Bt1m on drug detection technology

The Alpha 6 is a hand-held drug and explosives detection device that uses molecular resonance technology.

TA CHAT CHAI, PHUKET: Phuket Governor Wichai Phraisa-ngop has approved the purchase of two state-of-the-art detection devices, one for explosives and the other for contraband. The devices will be used at the Ta Chat Chai checkpoint.

The Alpha 6 detectors, which cost around 500,000 baht each, use “molecular resonance” technology to detect the presence of drugs and explosives from up to 300 meters away.

Suthee Sirianun, an officer with the Phuket Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, says that procurement procedures mean that it would take around one month to acquire the devices.

ASLM Trading Co Ltd demonstrated the Alpha 6 to former Phuket Governor Preecha Ruangjan and Phuket Provincial Police Commander Apirak Hongtong at Phuket Provincial Police Station around two months ago.

The demonstration showed that the devices were successful in locating hidden drugs around 70% of the time.

“At Ta Chat Chai checkpoint, we’re also going to use two American pit-bull terrier sniffer dogs to find drugs,” Mr Suthee added.

OK ! So they are doing something to try and control the situation .
BUT
Who are going to operate the things ??

Cant be the BIB cos their ammo will be sniffed as Explosives.
Also the BIB are not totally unconnected with the illegal substances trade, and no doubt will have traces of their latest confiscation in their pockets.

That rules them out then

It would seem that the operators will have to be unarmed and squeaky clean, and, should a terrorist with half a ton of Semtex hidden underneath sackfulls of wakky baccky turn up , they will have to contact the BIB - 300 meters away - to ask for backup.

By which time the evil ones would have pissed off into the distance !

The ALPHA 6 is a revolutionary product for search and detection of specific contraband substances. The ALPHA 6 is available in two variants, explosive detector and narcotic detector.

The ALPHA 6 Detection System is a totally unique method of locating contraband in any conditions and from a range of up to 300m. The ALPHA 6 works on "Molecular Resonance" and the ALPHA 6 system uses molecular recognition of programmed contrabands.

The ALPHA 6 is completely passive and has no ill effects on the operators. Nothing can block the molecular tracking of the ALPHA 6 and therefore the ALPHA 6 will find contraband when dogs are fooled by surrounding odors. As pointed out by a reader of James Randi's site, the Alpha 6 looks to be made from the exact same plastic mould used for the infamous Quadro Tracker, which was renamed the MOLE tracker after the company moved to Britain when the FBI raided the US headquarters. In fact, the ADE series of detectors also look nearly identical.

I think a couple of decent dogs would do the same job, of course they have to care for treat the dogs in a humane manner , so I guess it would be impossible.

It basically functions like a dowsing rod. Read the test results (double-blind) by the US Navy for the Sniffex (same product, same company). It's a crock. Same results as a dowser +/- 10% accuracy.

Sadly many countries with weak import controls or where corruption is rife are buying into these scams. Our research has shown that these devices can be made for as little as $250 and are then sold for up to, $30,000 which of course includes the bribe.
We are continually commenting on these frauds wherever we find them, blogs, newspaper reports etc.
