Clashes delay start of summits
Clashes between United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) red-shirt protesters and local Pattaya residents donning blue forced the postponement of the Asean-China and Asean-South Korea Summits in Pattaya this morning.
About 1,000 red shirt protestors gathered at the Phrathamnak road as early at 7.30am aiming to block the road leading to the Royal Cliff Beach hotel, the venue of the summit. They were confronted by about 300 blue-shirt residents. Both sides were armed with wooden sticks and stakes.
Leaders of both groups were trying to negotiate with one another when fighting broke out resulting in a number of injuries.
UDD protesters were trying to break through the blue-shirt protesters in an attempt to disrupt the summits being held at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort. Firecrackers and ping-pong bombs were hurled and BB guns fired during the clash.
Riot police together with soldiers and navy personnel were able to disperse the riot, and attempted to blockade the road leading to the hotel.
The Asean-China Summit was due to start at 9am but Chinese delegates were unable to reach the Royal Cliff. The Asean–South Korea Summit was scheduled to start at 10.30am but the South Korean delegation was also prevented from reaching the summit venue. This summit meeting with Asean appeared likely to be delayed as well.
About 10am, another group of red shirt protestors led a convoy of about 100 taxis along main beach road. They were about 300 metres away from Walking Street in South Pattaya and were heading towards to road leading up to the venue.
Traffic banked up behind the convoy as police tried to direct traffic.
