Pattaya - Clashes delay start of summits

    Clashes delay start of summits

Clashes between United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) red-shirt protesters and local Pattaya residents donning blue forced the postponement of the Asean-China and Asean-South Korea Summits in Pattaya this morning.

About 1,000 red shirt protestors gathered at the Phrathamnak road as early at 7.30am aiming to block the road leading to the Royal Cliff Beach hotel, the venue of the summit. They were confronted by about 300 blue-shirt residents. Both sides were armed with wooden sticks and stakes.

Leaders of both groups were trying to negotiate with one another when fighting broke out resulting in a number of injuries.

UDD protesters were trying to break through the blue-shirt protesters in an attempt to disrupt the summits being held at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort. Firecrackers and ping-pong bombs were hurled and BB guns fired during the clash.

Riot police together with soldiers and navy personnel were able to disperse the riot, and attempted to blockade the road leading to the hotel.

The Asean-China Summit was due to start at 9am but Chinese delegates were unable to reach the Royal Cliff. The Asean–South Korea Summit was scheduled to start at 10.30am but the South Korean delegation was also prevented from reaching the summit venue. This summit meeting with Asean appeared likely to be delayed as well.

About 10am, another group of red shirt protestors led a convoy of about 100 taxis along main beach road. They were about 300 metres away from Walking Street in South Pattaya and were heading towards to road leading up to the venue.

Traffic banked up behind the convoy as police tried to direct traffic.

2 red-shirted protesters injured in Pattaya clash

Pattaya - Two red-shirted protesters were injured during their battle with the blue-shirted demonstrators in front of the Royal Cliff Beach Resort Hotel Saturday morning.

At 9:34 am, the two sides sent representatives to negotiate and agreed to keep a distance between the two groups of demonstrators to avoid more clashes.

Local residents volunteer to protect summit venue

Local residents volunteer to protect summit venue

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban gave an interview to Channel 3 that local people in Pattaya and Chon Buri would come out to prevent red-shirted people from disrupting the Asean summit with dialogue partners.

He said the local residents would act as volunteers to help the government keep order.

    The Nation

From my understanding most local residents wished they would all fok off to protest in Bangkok.

Feck me, the thai male is a scary creature. In another thread they speak of 'Thai Warriors'. No wonder nobody dares to invade Thailand......

Keeping order with vigilantes, the good citizen blue shirts, will restore order with the Deputy Prime Minister's approval. Great idea.

hehehe, that video clip up there ^^^^ "11 60am" Its hilarious. The music, the way they show some stuff that looks untidy in the street like it wasnt untidy before the demonstators went through there. The way the 2 tv presenters are grinning in the studio when the clip finishes. Classic Thailand nonsence, gotta love living here

Are the police in Thailand completely incompetent that the Government needs to hire vigilantes to try and keep the peace?

The photo suggests that these blue shirts could be close to the military

    Quote of the day.

"I still cannot understand why they want to obstruct Thailand from hosting this summit," Mr Abhisit said.

I just arrived back from Bangkok and saw truck loads of Red Shirts parked on the side of the Chonburi by pass raod and on their way to Pattaya.

I wondered why all these trucks and Taxis were parked and about 1km down the highway was a police road block with another load of red shirt trucks pulled over.

All in all I drove through three police stations and I didn't even make Pattaya.

I am just watching the TV and the protestors have broken through the front door of the Royal Cliff hotel and are apparently helping themselves to a free (normally 1,200.00 Baht per head) Royal Cliff buffet.

^^ I was just trying to arrange the family mate but I'm the only one with a red shirt.

^ Actually the red shirts I saw were all youngish Thai blokes (isarn appearance) and they looked either pisses or stoned and were quite happy to see me.

No damage to my car mate and sorry for the typing error.

If I understand well those nice people were hungry and just wanted to book a table for lunch, then there was this rude (probably French) Maitre d' , and that's how the trouble started , right ?

That's good of them, obviously it's not a job for those with training.

    Or the police.

So now we have a new colour in fashion

the blue shirts certainly seemed kitted out exactly the same so no doubt some planning was involved which suugests they were not just local residents getting in on the act as implied by the authorities.

You have to love the police here, they must be the most inept police force in the world, apart from shaking you down for pocket money.

The pictures on the news (internet) showed that the blue shirts had their faces covered ( terrorist style ), while the red shirts did not have their faces covered. Must be a reason for that .

so the Reds are on the loose, looting, disrupting, drunk

The Thai police is so lazy, it's unbelievable, could explain all the unresolved murder case here. It's not corruption, it's pure lazyness.

Covering their faces so as not to be identified as Thai boot jacketed army officers.
