Pattaya - Police seize Dutch mans houses because of drugs

Police seize property and cancel visa of Dutch Man caught up in class 2 drug case.

On Thursday Morning we joined a group of Police Officers as they conducted a raid at a property located at the TW City Home 1 Village in Soi Kow Noi.

The raid was led by Police Major General Aditaerp, the Deputy Commander of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau and included Police Colonel Supit, the Superintendant of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau Region1 and Police Colonel Anon-Nut, the Superintendant of Pattaya’s Immigration Officer.

The Senior Officers were armed with court papers which empowered them to seize property owned by Mr. Hans Heinz Willem Arne De Graaf aged 44 from The Netherlands.

He was arrested on 6th January 2009 by the Narcotics Police along with his wife, Khun Giraporn aged 38 and both are currently on Police Bail relating to the supply of class 2 drugs.

The Immigration Police confirmed that they have cancelled Mr. De Graaf’s Marriage Visa and have issued him with a special crime visa which permits him to stay in Thailand while his court case is ongoing.

Police suspect that 4 properties were purchased with proceeds from selling the class 2 drugs and therefore 2 houses and 2 condos have been seized from Mr. De Graaf until his can prove his innocence in Court.

This case sends a strong message to other foreigners who involve themselves in criminal activities here in Thailand and the senior officers confirmed that this is one of a number of ongoing cases involving foreigners and illegal drugs.

Indeed and it is a very dangerous precedent to set seizing people's property before a guilty verdict has been reached in a court of law after due process.

But then again it's only a foreigner on trial.

The Police can influence the outcome of trials and they are obviously desperate to get their grubby mitts on this guy's desirable properties.

I would be willing to bet that those properties will not be returned to the owner regardless of the outcome of the trial.

I've always thought foreigners couldn't buy property in Thailand.

It is dangerous but certainly not a precedent. It is done all the time all over the world in the so-called 'war on drugs'. In the U.S. it is done under the guise of RICO laws.

Property is a general word for something owned.

Definition: The exclusive right of possessing, enjoying, and disposing of a thing;ownership; title.

Special exceptions are made with a maintained 'crime visa'.

I could understand his property being held/frozen pending further investigation to determine if it should be seized under drugs/crime law, but not to have it seized by court order before he was even accosted, let alone arrested and charged and convicted.

Must be more to it, hopefully, otherwise LoS is a far more dangerous place for ass and assets than anyone considered.

Having survived a forensic audit I can imagine what those people are going through, esp if anything was purchased with money from an unverifiable source.

Pickles: Property is anything with value or equity or can be even rights, not just tangibles like cash, jewelry, cars, etc.

His Wife likely owns the houses and as she is charged as well there goes the houses, and if that guy is guilty (and he looks damned guilty to me ) he is one we can well do without here in LOS.
