    "We want Mr Thaksin back."

    Thaksin suspense
    By Theerawat Khamthita
    Today's Top Stories

Ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra says he will be back in Thailand soon - and will announce the exact date on Tuesday.

In a telephone call from Beijing to a crowd of supporters in Chiang Rai yesterday, Mr Thaksin said he was coming home soon.

"On Tuesday, I'll have the answer as to when I'll come back," he told about 1,000 jubilant supporters who gathered at a market in Chiang Rai to celebrate "Thaksin Nostalgic Day" yesterday.

More than 200 banquet tables were set up with banners stretching across the hailing the ousted prime minister's homecoming plan.

The event was organised by supporters of Mr Thaksin's, who call themselves the Thaksin Loyalists Club and are led by the owner of a beef noodle eatery.

The group grabbed headlines when they staged a protest against the now-defunct Council for National Security which engineered the coup that toppled Mr Thaksin in 2006. Club members discarded the charter booklets distributed prior to the constitutional referendum last year to highlight their anger against the coup makers.

At yesterday's party the members, some fighting back tears, listened to Mr Thaksin speak in both central and northern dialects for about 10 minutes. The former prime minister, a native of neighbouring Chiang Mai, said House Speaker Yongyuth Tiyapairat was also with him in Beijing.

"Aren't you excited that one of us from Chiang Rai finally made it as House Speaker?" asked Mr Thaksin.

Memorabilia such as CDs chronicling Mr Thaksin's life, caps, shirts and leaflets with updated news on the deposed prime minister were distributed at the party.

A table was arranged for participants of the event who were not already members of the club to sign up for membership.

The gathering was broadcast live through a station and recorded by the People's Television station (PTV) team.

Club members also took turns speaking on stage during the feast.

"During Mr Thaksin's government, the economy prospered. People lived well and ate well," a villager who attended the party said.

"The projects introduced by Mr Thaksin's government were very useful to us, the 30-baht healthcare scheme and the Village Fund.

"But the change [after the coup] made our lives worse," one speaker told the audience.

Another villager said: "We want Mr Thaksin back."

    PAD to discuss Thaksin's return
    Sun, February 24, 2008

Leaders of an anti-Thaksin alliance will meet Monday to discuss its future direction in the wake of what it calls an alarming trend of political power being distorted to benefit the interests of one person at the expense of the country.

"There are signs of a move to help Thaksin [Shinawatra] return to Thailand, especially reports that the Foreign Ministry has returned his red diplomatic passport," Suriyasai Katasila, coordinator of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), said Sunday.

He said the PAD insisted in principle on the government solving the problems of the country rather than doing everything to help Thaksin return to Thailand safely. However, the PAD does support the former prime minister's return to defend himself against charges he faces.

Probably a good decision I made to spend most of this year in my home in Phuket. Gonna board up the windows at my Bangkok place.

I disagree, Samak seems to be an illiterate fool, so Taksin being back would be a nice change with the old again,

Actually, I suspect Toxin will work behinds the scenes with Samak pulling the strings until the legalities of his return to power can be arranged. I suppose this might be 12-18 months?

Thai ex-premier set to return home from exile

BANGKOK, Feb 25 (TNA)--Thai Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama said on Monday that former premier Thaksin Shinawatra will definitely return to Thailand from self-imposed exile overseas within a month.

He also confirmed Mr. Thaksin's earlier promise that the ex-prime minister would announce Tuesday on the date of his trip back to his home country.

    25 Febuary 2008

Deputy Commander of the National Police’s Special Operations Police General Proong Boonpadung (ปรุง บุญผดุง) revealed that the National Police have made preparations to insure the safety in the event of deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s return. He affirmed that it is police duty to insure the safety for all prominent social figures and that Mr. Thaksin is not receiving special treatment.

The Deputy Commander stated however that the former Prime Minister’s plans have not yet been made clear as to when he will return. If Mr. Thaksin is to return he will have to contact the National Immigration Bureau after which police will mobilize safety for him.

^Interesting to see the welcome party. If they pay all the taxis and motorbike taxis to welcome him at Swampypoon, could be quite a spectacle.

Thaksin to go to England on March 13
    BREAKING NEWS

BangkokPost.com) - Ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra said he will ask the Supreme Court's permission to go to England to take care of business of Manchester City on March 13, which is a day after he is scheduled to appear at the court to attend the first hearing on the Ratchadaphisek land deal.

"I will go to England on March 13," Mr Thaksin told reporters.

He also said that since his return to Thailand on February 28, he spent most of his time preparing to fight the alleged corruption charges against him, so he has not had much time to go anywhere else.

He revealed that he has talked to Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej on the phone.

"We did not talk about politics, and I didn't give him any advice," he said.

He also said he would like to meet Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda if he has time because he has great respect for Gen Prem.

Hmm, I am getting lost in the tenses . . . simple past, past continuous, past perfect continuous, past perfect. . . sheesh!

So, he says he will ask if he can go and then says he will go. . . Luckily he is held to the same rules as we all are.

Having heard Thaksin speak English, I would say he doesn't seem to be held to the same grammatical rules. But never mind, no need to get tense or worry about tenses, because here is Thailand- plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose.

Former PM says he wishes to meet with Privy Councilor before returning to UK
    06 March 2008

Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra revealed to reporters that he will return to the United Kingdom on March 13th while on his way to attend a meeting of the Thai Golfers Association, of which he is the chairman.

Reporters also inquired Police Lieutenant Colonel Thaksin whether he hopes to meet with Privy Councilor General Prem Tinsulanont, to which the former prime minister stated that he does. He said that he considers General Prem a highly respected elder and wishes to pay respect to him while he is in the nation.

Nonetheless, Police Lieutenant Colonel Thaksin stated that he must spend most of his time preparing to meet with the Supreme Court on March 12th to face charges pertaining to the Ratchada land scandal case. His court date on the 12th will be the first scheduled court hearing on the case.
