A Finnish national wanted for murder and large-scale drug trafficking was arrested in Hua Hin on 24 June following an undercover operation by Thai immigration police.
Daniel Reijo Karvonen, who was the subject of a Red Notice issued by INTERPOL, was detained at a condominium gym in Hua Hin district by officers from Immigration Bureau Division 3. The arrest followed a lengthy surveillance operation.
According to police, the investigation team disguised themselves as fitness trainers in order to verify the identity of the suspect. Once confirmed, they revealed their identities and arrested Karvonen at the scene.
The operation was led by Police Major General Chairit Anurith, Commander of Immigration Division 3, who said the arrest was carried out in accordance with orders from the National Police Chief and forms part of a government policy to crack down on transnational crime.
Karvonen is wanted by authorities in Norway in connection with three major criminal cases. These include a murder that took place in the town of Kongsvinger in November 2024, as well as the alleged production and distribution of illegal drugs in the same area. He is also accused of being involved in a cross-border drug smuggling operation between Sweden and Norway using vehicles to transport narcotics.
Authorities described Karvonen as a dangerous individual and a threat to public safety. Norwegian officials are now seeking his extradition to face charges in his home country.
Police said the arrest highlights Thailand’s commitment to enforcing immigration and criminal laws, particularly in relation to foreign nationals suspected of serious crime.
