Thai national media provided updates on the Alcohol Control Bill, which the Senate accepted in principle during its first reading on March 31st, following approval by the House of Representatives in the second and third readings on March 19th. The bill includes provisions related to alcohol advertising.
The Senate has appointed a 27-member special committee to review amendments within seven days. Senator Tewarit Maneechai stated briefly that the bill would return for Senate debate after July 3rd, with amendment discussions scheduled for July 17th.
Meanwhile, Dr. Suthat Chottanapund, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Disease Control, clarified that the current 2008 Alcohol Control Act remains in force. He addressed public confusion circulating online, emphasizing that 24-hour alcohol sales and unrestricted advertising are still prohibited.
Violations of advertising rules can result in up to one year in jail, fines up to 500,000 baht, and additional daily fines. Alcohol sales must still comply with designated hours—11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM to midnight—with violations carrying penalties of up to six months’ imprisonment or a 10,000-baht fine.
