Condoms are useful. They can hold fresh water.

I'm assuming that these tremors are infrequent enough (one in the 22 years I've lived here) that I can enjoy my remaining years aloft rather than a mere condo existence closer to earth...Of course, I might have offered a different opinion had you asked while my walls were shaking...

@shutree - thanks for the tips. I have that aluminum-like thermal blanket but it's in my hiking bag. I'll put it in my go-bag for the moment.

@tomcat - thnx for the reply. Did you check your unit & building to see if it has visible damage? Ground floor or basement parking (if it has one). I remember the Surfside condo in Florida - there were cracks in the beams & pillars in the basement garage prior to its collapse. I hope your building is OK and that it's a once in a lifetime experience for you. I wish you more happy years in your retirement.

In another note, some positive news. A grandma & her 2 granddaughters were rescued from a collapsed building in Myanmar.

Thai Hotels Report 8-10 Percent Early Check-Outs After Recent Earthquake

Thai Hotels Association (THA) President Mr. Thienprasith Chaipattaranan revealed that following the earthquake in Myanmar, which was felt in Thailand, hotel members reported that 8-10% of tourists nationwide opted for early check-outs. The most affected areas include Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Ayutthaya, while some travelers have chosen to change their destination to Pattaya or Phuket instead.

The association expected the earthquake to cause a short-term decline in foreign tourists’ confidence over the next two weeks. This includes those who had already booked trips but decided not to come and those still considering their travel plans who may now postpone their visits. As a result, the hotel and tourism industry is projected to lose at least 10-15% in revenue.

Additionally, the THA anticipated that the earthquake’s impact will extend into the upcoming Songkran festival, despite reassurances by the Thai Government that the festival would be held normally. It is estimated that it will take about a month for the situation to return to normal.

“The collapse of a building in Chatuchak has gone viral globally. It is now important to restore tourist confidence ahead of this year’s Songkran festival,” Mr. Thienprasith stated.

...the Juristic Office took care of all that. Pics of damage on all floors and parking structure are posted on our building Line account along with condo owner comments. The parking structure is a separate building. In our unit, damage was limited to an extensive hairline crack in the living room wall: we might leave it unrepaired as a souvenir...

So many people claiming they felt an earthquake because they read about an evacuation in Bangkok...

Thailand's Ministry of Public Health has issued guidelines for individuals experiencing symptoms of a condition referred to as "earthquake drunk" after the recent earthquake, according to deputy government spokesman Anukul Prueksanusak.
Many people have reported feeling as though they are swaying or moving after the earthquake, he said, noting that the condition is caused by disruptions to the human balance system.
While the symptoms are generally temporary, they can persist for weeks in some cases, especially for those with anxiety disorders or migraines, who may experience more severe effects, he said.
The Ministry of Public Health has provided recommendations to help people manage the symptoms and stress.
These include practicing deep and slow breathing, drinking water or ginger tea while avoiding alcohol and caffeine, taking breaks from phone screens to allow the eyes to rest, looking at distant objects or lying down, limiting news coverage of casualties to reduce stress and taking motion sickness medication followed by complete rest.
Mr Anukul said the government is deeply concerned about the public's well-being.
Those feeling stressed by the earthquake so much that it affects their livelihood are encouraged to seek medical advice or access here2healproject.com, which provides mental health consultation service via chats.
Individuals whose symptoms last more than a week should also seek medical assistance, he said, adding they can contact the emergency helpline at 1669 or the mental health helpline at 1323 for help.

Two buildings in Bangkok declared unsafe, occupants evacuated

Two buildings in Bangkok have been declared unsafe and all the occupants have been evacuated, after structural engineers, mobilised by Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), inspected 155 buildings, including high-rises in Bangkok, according to the Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department.

Thirty-three other buildings have been classified at “Yellow level” and 102 buildings at “Green level”. The department neither named the unsafe buildings nor elaborated on the meaning of “Yellow” and “Green” levels.

Meanwhile, engineers from the departments of public works and town and country planning have inspected 89 buildings of 28 government agencies and found 73 of them to be in a normal condition and 13 have sustained some damage, with three requiring additional inspection.

The Comptroller General’s Department has set aside 200 million baht in emergency funding, to be used to help people affected by last Friday’s earthquake.

While Bangkok is the worst affected the earthquake in Myanmar, other provinces affected include Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Lamphun, Lampang, Mae Hong Son, Phrae, Nan, Phetchabun, Phitsanuloke, Sukhothai, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon and Chainat.

Governors of these affected provinces have been instructed, by the Comptroller General’s Department, to assess the damage caused by tremors in their respective provinces and to assist affected people in accordance with the regulations.

The tremors felt in Thailand have been classified as Level 3 public disaster warranting a national response, with the setting up of a National Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command, led by Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

Doesn't sound like Green for OK to me.

With no inside info or experience of seismology I would not wish to buy reside even Air BnB for teh night in dodgy building

    OR

and this is why need to public info (but won't in case someone loses cash)

If It is an adjacent building.

While I am sure condo owners have a vested interest in repair, they want to the government to certify ok so thay can pass any liabilty.

I foresee a few long term issues

1 Devaluing properties with obvious or reported damage and all as market hit?
2 Fall in demand for high rises and possible % morgage loan/insurance issues
3 Weakend structures may be more liable to issues if a similar event occurs
4 Tourists may be deterred not just from damaged areas, young gap year kids enjoying a tour on parents money may suggest skip Thailand
5 Fewer Chinese investors bringing locals up to speed on gambling, call scams and recipes for endangered species
6 Ghost and fortune telling industry may require more staff lucky Amulets and Jatukom, typical taxi may totally obscure the screen, TIT

Stay safe everyone, In NY beyond Manhattan the poor live in projects and outside luxury condos in central London high rises are usually where the poor are stacked in hutches, I cannot understand why anyone would wish to work or live in a high rise in an earthquake zone voluntarily.

I wouldn't trust any of their "surveys", you cannot patch up a high rise of its supports have weakened but i suspect the Thais will apply a load of polyfilla and declare all is well, they don't want to kill the condon markets , at least not until they have divested themselves of these liabilities. If I owned an apartment in one of the affected buildings i'd be viewing a loss imo.

yes they willneed to bite the bullet

    QUAKER OTES
However the Sino Chinese are notorious for never selling at a loss . I think there may be a lot of vacant appartments which may appear as cheap rentals for the unwary.
Prices and buildings may literally be falling. Structures with cracks this time cannot be in a good state if there is a second quake.

I am pretty sure International Insurers who always look for any reason to deny claims will regard these as "Acts of God" ?

Has anyone here claimed on Earthquake damage?

I've seen many post-earthquake vids from YouTubers wherein their condos had considerable damage. In one, his entire bathroom was wet/ semi flooded due to a leak/ broken pipe. In another, one wall had a long diagonal crack and he could see sunlight/ the outside from the crack. Eew.... He said that some of his building-mates planned to sleep in the condo lobby that night. He planned to stay in his condo that night but transferred to another place in another city shortly after. I suspect he's now in Pattaya since he said it's a beach city. Can't blame him for seeking other accoms/ city at the moment.

I've also heard from another vlogger that many hotel chains are offering 50% discount on their rates, and that searches increased for low rise hotels & apartments.

Kudos to the Philippines Katie. That's a fantastic thing. Something the Trump admin won't be providing I suspect
Australia has sent money but no personnel . Which I think they could easily do but it's 1 mo th shy of a federal election and I'm guessing they don't want any media spin. Which is a shame. Previously the Oz military have been sent to png , Solomon's Vanuatu etc. Perhaps the red tapes to much?

@BLD - I think in the PH delegation, 30 or 35 ppl were medical personnel and the rest were military or police staff. The head of the delegation said that it will be good exposure/ practice for the team in case PH gets "the big one". According to a study done in the early 2000s, there's a big earthquake in Luzon every 300 or 400 yrs (due to the Philippine plate and also the West Valley Fault/ Marikina fault). Just like Japan, we're anticipating a "big one".

PH has experienced many typhoons and earthquakes and the international community has been generous to come to our aid. The PH team leader said that we are being neighbourly. There are also 4 OFWs (teachers) in Mandalay who are still missing. Their families in PH have been featured in the news here.

Mass Hysteria, Not Building Shake, Caused Panic at Bangkok Government Complex, Officials Say

Officials at the Government Complex in Chaeng Watthana have clarified that a brief period of panic among staff, triggered by reports of a building shake, was the result of mass hysteria rather than any actual structural instability.

The incident, which led to temporary evacuations, was not prompted by an official evacuation order, authorities have confirmed.

On Wednesday, social media platforms were abuzz with reports of a supposed building shake at Building A of the Government Complex and the nearby Department of Special Investigation (DSI) building around 10:20 AM. Reports circulated online, claiming that an evacuation had been ordered following the perceived tremors.

However, the "Government Complex Chaengwattana" Facebook page swiftly addressed the situation, posting a message stating that the staff's reaction was due to a "shared delusion" and that no official evacuation had been initiated.

The Thung Song Hong Police Station, investigating the incident, spoke with Saneh Chumpreecha, senior expert of Government Complex Administration 1, who provided clarity on the events.

According to Saneh, the initial alarm stemmed from staff on the fifth floor of the Intellectual Property Court, who witnessed a glass of water shaking. This caused them to flee downstairs in a state of panic.

The news of the apparent shaking quickly spread, prompting staff in the adjacent DSI building to also evacuate, despite no official instruction to do so.

To quell the rising anxiety, both building administrations used the public address system to inform staff that there was no cause for concern and to request their return to work. By the time of the official statement, many staff members had already begun to return to their desks.

Officials have reassured the public that the buildings are structurally sound and that the incident was a case of mass panic, not a genuine building shake.

From the BBC. A reporter from the BBC went undercover in Mandalay. IMO it's good that they sent a reporter who is Indian/ South Asian ethnicity, as she could blend in w/ the locals or other Indians in Myanmar. When I visited Myanmar, I saw 3 distinct "looks" or ethnicities: Malay/ SE Asian, Chinese & Indian.

    *****
I've also seen a CGTN vid wherein the Chinese team of rescuers were able to rescue a man after ~120 hrs under the rubble.
