It was blazing hot that day and I intended to sit in the air conditioned car if the power went out!

Condos built since 2007 are earthquake safe - Thaicondo

In a bid to allay concerns among condo residents and owners over the safety of condominiums, in the aftermath of Friday’s earthquake, the Thai Condominium Association (Thaicondo) offered an assurance today that all tall residential buildings constructed since 2007 were designed to withstand earthquakes.


Association president Prasert Taedullayasatit said in a statement that the cracks being found in the walls of some condo buildings and the detachment of wall tiles and ceiling boards are regarded as minor damage that do not indicate damage to the structure of the building.


He said that condominium residents can send pictures of the damage from yesterday’s earthquake to the association via the @Traffy.fondue Line account, so volunteer engineers from the association can help assess the safety of their rooms free of charge.


There were about 230,000 housing and condominium units, worth an estimated 1.45 trillion baht, which remained unsold at the end of last year. Of these, about 130,000 are houses and 97,000 are condominium units, mostly selling for less than 10 million baht per unit.


Some real estate developers have reduced their investments in new condominium projects, due to this glut of unsold units.

Got reports back from my tenants and the JPs that the modern buildings and condos are fine.

Which is nice.

It seems a few others died falling from condos in Bangkok.

• Phaya Thai Police Station Mr. Kouma Lassine, a Malian national, fell from a condo on Petchburi New Road, Ratchathewi District.
• Tao Poon Police Station: Mr. Thiraphong Yaiyong, age 37, fell from a condo in the Bang Pho area.
• Bang Sue Police Station, 8 deceased, construction building of the Office of the Auditor General, Chatuchak District, currently verifying the identities of the deceased, 4 males, 2 females, 2 genders unknown.
• Bang Chan Police Station, Mr. Naing Soe Oo, 46 ​​years old, Myanmar national, construction project of a condo in Ram Intra area, Khan Na Yao district, construction materials fell on him.
• Huamark Police Station: Ms. Sutthimon Bunyen, 78 years old, fell from a condo in the Rama 9 area.
• Lumpini Police Station: Mr. Phat Phatharit, age 26, fell on the fire escape on the 23rd floor of a condo in the Witthayu Road area.

^RIP to those poor souls, including those in Myanmar. I've heard from news vids that there's a "stench of death" in some places already...

I've added stuff to my "go bag" - 1L water (just had 500 ml there before), 1 change of clothes including underwear, whistle, flashlight, coins (to make noise with in case the whistle doesn't work), biscuits/ cookies, etc.

The news outlets in PH are interviewing scientists here & are trying to educate/ warn people about earthquake readiness, go bag, etc. One geologist said that if there's movement in the West Valley Fault (which runs along Metro Manila) and it creates a 7.2 mag quake, the possible casualties would be 50,000. Scary... They're always trying to make us (Filipinos) ready for the "big one". Maybe it will come, maybe it won't. But if it's your time, then it's your time... Stay safe, y'all.

When I was diving, I had a plastic whistle that works when wet. Cheap, lightwieght.

I also had a small dive torch as a backup to my main torch. Not too expensive, works underwater and in heavy rain.

The Thai authorities have now closed some key places, do to vibrations and cracks. The big one being Government Complex building A that holds the Immigration department. Also close the Courts on Rachada Pisek Road. The Immigration closure could be dicey. I know I need a new retirement visa and re-entry permit.

Several buildings in Bangkok were evacuated late Monday morning amid reports of vibrations and cracks appearing in the buildings.
The evacuations occurred about 10am. Affected premises included Building A of the Government Complex on Chaeng Watthana Rd, the Ministry of Labour in Din Daeng district and court buildings on Ratchadaphisek Road.
People were also cleared from the headquarters of Government Housing Bank in Huai Khwang district, the Criminal Court on Ratchadaphisek and the Social Security Office in Din Daeng.

Just saw a video of someone returning to their high rise condo (it had been cleared) and staring outside through a crack in the wall.

No, I wouldn't be staying in that!

^my whistle is made of metal; it works OK. I have a whistle in my go bag & one in my hiking bag.

My place is ~2 hrs away from Manila and the West Valley Fault and ~1.5 hrs away from Taal Volcano, 1 hr away from Mt Makiling (a dormant volcano). I'm f**ked in 3 directions, lol. But I like where I live and if it's time, then it's time....

Nervous workers evacuate buildings in Bangkok

We were on our way to the collapsed building when we saw thousands of people streaming along the side of the road in the nearby district of Chatuchak.


Staff from two skyscrapers blocks - the TMBThanachart Bank HQ, where we're told around 2,500 people are working today, and a twin towered building in the final stages of being built with about 500 construction workers and security staff inside.


Speaking to workers, it seems there were no official evacuations in either building but that rumours spread of the sounds of cracking being heard.
Staff in both buildings have now gone back inside, but it’s not an isolated incident. My colleague’s apartment block is one of several in the city to have been evacuated this morning.


The governor of Bangkok has urged residents not to panic.


But as many people return to work for the first time since Friday’s quake, if nothing else it’s a nod to the nervousness being felt here in the Thai capital.

I understand cracking noises were heard, which probably ignited the imagination.

If you remember that famous shopping centre collapse in Korea, people were hearing those and ignored them, so...

@tc - just curious, does it make you rethink about high-rise living? Do you still want to live in a condo unit high up or would you want something closer to the ground?

Misskit and I have mentioned that it's maximum of 3rd or 4th floor living for us (3F for MK, 4/F for me). Disclosure: I now live on the 2/F (1st flr for Brits) of a 2-storey apt building. I once worked on the 12/F of a 30+ storey building in Manila and am glad that I didn't experience any quake during my time there.

I've seen several vids of Bangkok expats/ YouTubers and many of their condo buildings have damage of some sort. They're now rethinking of transferring to other accoms, like low rise buildings or 2-storey townhouses.

When I saw the vid of the press briefing of the PM telling people that it's safe to return to the buildings, I was like... Helloooooo??!!

In my mind was - don't those buildings need to be inspected first? In 2019, after experiencing a 6.1 mag quake (was prolly a 4.5 or 5 in my office), our bosses made us WFH. The building was inspected first prior to making us return to the office. (The engineers/ inspectors concluded that there was no significant damage & we could return to work the next day.)

The building in Chiang Mai that Misskit posted - the one with wonky pillars at the entrance - that looks like an accident waiting to happen...

Hi BLD. I'm here on the ground in Bangkok. It's not as bad as the media is making it out to be. Myanmar looks fucked but Bangkok has a few cracks apart from 1 building that was under construction.

Thailand did not have a major earthquake. We got leftovers from poor Myanmar. The ground shook a bit and then we sat on the field for a few hours.

Local BBC posted a story about a guy at my work and his heroic efforts to save dozens of children from this terrible earthquake in Bangkok.

We literally just did the fire drill and then stayed later waiting for parents to get through the traffic to pick them up.

We obviously had to evacuate the school, it was calm and organized for the most part. No TV interview for me. Probably just as well, I have a face for radio.

This was brought to me (and now y'all) by the YT algorithm. It's a series of compiled vids. Most are from Myanmar, I think, as the monks are wearing maroon robes (not orange). The CCTV footages are quite scary - they're like stuff seen in a horror movie.... I hope they are able to rescue ppl...

There are still people sleeping in the lobby of my condo, they'd still be fucked if it all came down when they were sleeping. Still processing that my old apartment building in Mandalay is now rubble and dust. We got of lightly in BKK by comparison.
