Welcome back!
^thanks, cyrille. I was busy with other stuff and just stayed away from TD.
But I heard/ read about the earthquake in Myanmar/ TH, so I'm here for the chismis. (the "tea") Lol.
Btw is Simon43 still in Yangon/ Myanmar or is he back in TH? Hope he's OK, wherever he is.
Apparently the big building in BKK that collapsed was an Italian-Thai Developments job...just like the road bridge that collapsed the other week, and numerous other events caused by lax safety standards in their projects. OK, earthquakes are an "act of God" but you have to wonder if sub-standard construction was involved again? anybody know if they have earthquake proof construction standards in Thailand?
I have not heard of any earthquake standards, which is not to say they don't exist. Bangkok especially is on an alluvial plain, so earthquakes usually result in wobbles rather than big hits.
When I lived in Taiwan, my house was on a rocky hillside and there the quakes were like explosions. Downtown is mud, things shake around. I remember my first night at a bar in Taipei, the glasses on shelves started tinkling and I had a curiously uncomfortable feeling. First beer and my immediate reaction was that Taiwan Beer was very strong stuff. Local residents laughed it off, it happens all the time.
Here in Bangkok, that building is a Baht 2 billion project for the Office of the Auditor General. 'Er Indoors has had issues with them in the past, getting picky over how government money is spent. I think there will be a lot of government employees seeing some irony in this.
Adding, of course, that it is a tragedy for the families of those killed.
Yeah, except it was in Myanmar.
Sagaing Fault - Wikipedia
Thai news is all over this collapsed building at the moment, wondering why it fell so easily when the main structure of the building was almost complete. Questions will be asked and lessons will be learned, in other words its business as usual and the trapped workers are all burmese or cambodians anyway.
Apparently Thai buildings built from ... i didnt catch the date ... are built to withstand earthquakes, but not ones as severe as this one, Thailand apparently has never been affected to such an extent before. The severity that BKK, 1000kms away from the epicenter, felt was due to the fact that the quake was relatively near the suface, had it been deeper the effects at such a distance wiukd have been much less.
The news is very much BKK centered, surely northern cities, being much closer to the epicenter will have experienced much heavier shocks than BKK., but apart from a hospital evacuation in CM, its as if the north didnt exist.
The design of many condo and apartment buildings puts the mass of the building above stilts. Stilts that are formed because they want a parking garage on the ground floor. Saw a lot of these built in Chiang Mai and I know they are not designed for earthquakes. Once those lower pillars go, the whole building collapses quickly.
Stay safe all.
You Make Your Own Luck
^similar to the Surfside Building collapse in Florida, then. The pillars of that condo building collapsed then a few seconds later, the whole building collapsed. IIRC prior to the building's destruction, there were vids from a realtor (or was it the client?). The client went to the building to view a condo unit for sale, I think. The vids showed water penetration on the ceiling of the garage, water puddles on the floor of the garage, etc.
It was also the case in Turkiye, I think? The recent-ish earthquake in Izmir? The ground floor were garages held by pillars & the upper floors were for housing.
Sigh... I hope they find survivors from that collapsed building in BKK and in other places in Myanmar.
I vaguely remember the collapse of the Hyatt hotel in Baguio, PH. 1990, I think. It was an 8.0 and probably 7+ in my province. There were many trapped souls in that building. Accdg to locals, that place is now haunted. One senator's wife became famous because she was rescued from the rubble after several days. (I think she was there to attend a conference.) She survived by drinking her own pee.
Mendip.
barry harracudaYou would have thought that even in Thailand these things are monitored and that the 'Thailand Geological Society will have some idea.
Mendip, they do!Yeah, except it was in Myanmar.
The recent 7.7-magnitude earthquake that shook Myanmar is linked to the powerful Sagaing Fault, one of the most significant active fault lines in Southeast Asia.
.
Spanning approximately 1,200 kilometres from Myitkyina in northern Myanmar, this north-south fault runs through key cities such as Mandalay, Taunggyi, Naypyidaw, Bago and Yangon before extending into the Andaman Sea.
.
Research from the Earthquake and Tectonic Geology Research Unit at Chulalongkorn University and the Thai Meteorological Department’s Earthquake and Tsunami Monitoring Division indicates that the Sagaing Fault has a distinct characteristic of accumulating energy over long periods before releasing it in large, powerful earthquakes rather than frequent smaller tremors.
.
Given this behaviour, major earthquakes along the fault can have widespread impacts, including tremors felt in neighbouring countries like Thailand.
.
Studies suggest that if an earthquake of magnitude 7.0-8.0 occurs along the fault, northern Thailand could experience shaking intensity levels of 4-5 on the Richter scale.
.
This could cause household items to shake, windows and doors to rattle, and, in more severe cases, structural damage. In some instances, tremors may even reach central Thailand, including Bangkok.
.
The Sagaing Fault’s potential for large-scale seismic activity underscores the importance of monitoring and preparedness across the region.

out of your depth as usual harry. its geology, physics and science, and therefor way way above your pay grade. better you stick to posting your clickbait hookers, drunks and chickenheads cut and pastes and leave the important stuff to us big boys.

Of course one of the leading authorities, the USGS, is under attack from the orange turd.
He started gutting it in his first term.
So once the Thai have covered up just how poorly their car parks with buildings on top stand up to someone in the vacinity with a hacking tuberculosis cough all will be well with the condo market.
Now in a nation with regulatory regimes that were not subject to payment by envelope or reporting clearance by blokes dressed in black on motorcycles it would quickly become apparent that high rise developments were not specified against anything more than a loud party so if you own a condo 55555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555 55555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555 55555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555 55555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555 55555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555 55555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555 55555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555 55555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555 55555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555 55555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555 55555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555 555555

Anyone know the whereabouts of Simon? The reports and photos coming out of Myanmar look quite severe.
Translation from Chiang Mai News:
Chiang Mai orders 2 condos to be banned from entering and 1 more to be banned after severe damage, and has set up a command center to monitor the situation 24 hours a day.
Today (March 28, 2015), Mr. Nirun Phongsitthaworn, Chiang Mai Governor, ordered Mr. Siwakorn Buaphong, Chiang Mai Deputy Governor, to hold a meeting with relevant agencies at the Chiang Mai Incident Command Center in the Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organization to monitor the damage from the earthquake this afternoon.
The incident caused tremors in buildings, houses, and other places, and people felt the sensations in all 25 districts of Chiang Mai Province. Therefore, relevant agencies were called to a meeting to monitor the situation and report the damage immediately.
From the initial damage survey, there were 4 damaged high-rise buildings, most of which were residential buildings. One of the most concerning buildings was the Duangtawan Condominium, which was found to have sustained structural damage after the earthquake, with severely broken and twisted pillars. Chiang Mai Municipality initially ordered the building closed and prohibited people from entering or leaving the building. And in the process of contacting the building owners to come and discuss and solve the problem of repairing and improving together with the relevant agencies.
As for the other 3 places, namely Supalai Monte 1-2 and Suan Dok Park parking building, from the inspection, the main structure was not affected much. There will be only the decorations or extensions such as building walls, room walls, decorations that are cracked and fall off. Initially, only residents were allowed to enter and exit to move luggage and store their belongings. They were not allowed to stay yet. In this part, the building has already insured the residences. Residents can move to hotels or alternative accommodations first. At the same time, Chiang Mai Municipality has set up 2 temporary shelters to support them: at the gym of Chiang Mai Municipality Stadium and on the 2nd floor of Chiang Mai Arcade Bus Terminal 3.
For damages in other areas, Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital and Lanna Hospital are another place that was affected. Previously, doctors, nurses, and staff evacuated patients from the building first. But now, the building is open for entry as usual.
As for temples and ancient sites, initially 2 places were damaged: Wat San Sai Ton Kok, Tambon San Phisuea, Amphoe Mueang Chiang Mai. There are cracks at the pagoda and at Wat Nam Lom in San Kamphaeng District, the temple’s viharn is also cracked. Currently, technicians from relevant agencies have been sent to thoroughly assess the damage and find a solution. Meanwhile, other structures such as bridges, tunnels, dams, or reservoirs have not been found to have any structural damage.
^ Is Lulus condo, ERM, thai constructed investment property(s) OK?
its not usually considered, most in Thailand worry about flooding. The places Mrs Toot bought, land i always got her to buy in uplamds apart from one block outside BKK. all the places are almost all on bedrock, the place we bought to build our last place has 5 feet of soil before you hit solid rock, that was intentional on my part, not for earthquake proofing but stability. If this incident becomes more common, i pray for those in Thailand with deep soil exposure
