Four Brit 'drug smugglers' are paraded by Thai cops

Four British tourists have been paraded by Thai police after being arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle £1.7million of cannabis out of an airport in Thailand.

The suspected traffickers reportedly tried to evade officials by boarding a plane with 290lbs (131 kg) of the drugs at the airport on the island of Koh Samui on March 15.

Customs officers scanned their eight suitcases and noticed they were stuffed with vacuum-sealed bags of marijuana grown on the island where the hit series The White Lotus was recently filmed.

Police detained the baggage owners, identified as Antony Paul Mudd, 62, from London, Billy Daniel Harman, 36, from Newham, Philip Edward Goldstone, 63, from West Ham, and John George Canning, 34, from London.

They all face up to ten years in prison, along with a maximum fine of 500,000 baht (£11,469).

Photos show the embarrassed Brits covering their faces with paper as police photos were being taken. Their alleged scheme to buy cheap weed in Thailand - where it is legal - and sell in the UK for a handsome profit appeared to have been blown.

A police spokesman said: 'The suspects claimed they were hired by an employer abroad to travel to Thailand and smuggle cannabis out of the country.

'The employer arranged for travel tickets and accommodation for them, and they would receive the cannabis-packed suitcases at their hotels. They travelled to Koh Samui through a domestic flight from Bangkok. The alleged smugglers' were flying to Singapore with their final destination being London in England.

'Using cannabis is legal in Thailand but it cannot be exported or carried out of the country. That is a crime and police will catch offenders.'

Yes, it looks like life has already battered them. A few years in a Thai prison will age them even more quickly. Silly fools.

Lucky people. They were transporting through Singapore. Anyone who thinks Singapore does not screen transit bags has been smoking too much of their own product. Singapore would have executed them for that weight of drugs.

Absolutely crazy. What criminal mastermind planned this? The guy with the money probably, who certainly was not amongst those arrested and will be wanting his cash back. They might be safer in a Thai jai than back in the East End.

All four of them. Hang on:

Plus Ms. Bose Esther Fakuade, 26, "one of the four Brits".
    Erm, that makes five.

British Leader of International Cannabis Smuggling Gang Arrested at Samui Pier

A British man who was a head of an international cannabis smuggling gang was arrested at a pier on Samui Island on Monday (March 17th) with 165 Kg of Cannabis Flower Seized.

The Surat Thai Immigration told the Phuket Express that the investigation of previous cases continued. On March 17th, a foreign national had brought suitcases from a hotel in the Maenam area. The suspect, identified only as Mr. DARRYL, 30, British national, was reportedly staying at the hotel with many large suitcases stored in the room. The hotel reported the man and his associates’ suspicious behavior to authorities.

Immigration officers tracked the individual to a nearby ferry pier. Police revealed their identity and requested to inspect the suitcases loaded in a van. They found 10 large suitcases. Each suitcase contained dried cannabis flowers. The van driver admitted to being hired by a foreign man to transport the suitcases from Samui to Bangkok.

During the luggage loading process at the hotel, Mr. DARRYL was observed managing the bags and helping to load them onto the van. He even traveled with the van to the ferry pier, supervising the operation.

Authorities discovered that the plan to export the cannabis flowers via Samui Airport had failed due to tightened airport security. Consequently, the smugglers altered their plan, redirecting the shipment back to Bangkok for further attempts.

Relevant authorities then arrested Daryl, identified as the leader of a gang smuggling cannabis flowers abroad, at the pier on Samui Island. The operation follows stricter controls at Samui Airport.

Cannabis is decriminalized in Thailand but exporting it without a license is illegal, and as cannabis use remains mostly illegal in the UK there has been an increase in attempted smuggling of marijuana there.

Why do the Thai police even bother to make an arrest for exporting without a license? It would make more sense to make a call to the country where the dope was coming in and let them handle it in a place where it is actually illegal.

Probably because Thailand doesn't want to be viewed as a proxy supplier, it's a slippery slope.
There's been loads of cases recently of people trying to smuggle out, the tip of the iceberg methinks.
    Loads are getting through.

What I want to say is that it is a waste of resources for Thailand which doesn’t have as much money as the UK for prosecution or imprisonment. These are British people doing something against UK law and will prosecuted in Thailand for what may be just a civil charge.

I would think just about any country now expects a large number of the more intellectually challenged travelling from Thailand to have at least some weed or weed-related products about their person or their luggage.

A recently arrived pal was bemoaning his hotel having banned the smoking of weed on its premises until I last night showed him the dazzling array of gummies and cookies on offer.

That's the problem. It's for sale everywhere but you're not allowed to bloody smoke it anywhere!

    Sadly no pointing.

The 5th Region Police has announced the arrest of three British men and two US women in possession of 120kgs (distributed between their bags) in suitcases at Chiang Mai International Airport.

The group were to travel via Singapore, to Gatwick and then onto Brussels Airport.

What's with the drug mules risking travelling through Singapore? They should have got a lawful job if they're so ill-informed about the world.

They would be in transit through Singapore with their luggage checked to the final destination. Still a chance but lessened for sure.

You can bet your last dollar that Singapore screens transit bags.
