Belgian Kite Surfer Dies in Storm-Driven Tragedy in Prachuap Khiri Khan

On January 14th, 2024, a 56-year-old Belgian tourist lost his life while kite surfing at Khao Kalok Beach in Pranburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan. Strong winds reportedly swept him into nearby rocks despite red flag warnings about dangerous sea conditions.

Local authorities had cautioned against water sports in the area, but the challenging waves often attracted kite surfers.
The current northeastern monsoon has brought powerful winds and waves up to 4 meters, causing extensive coastal erosion in Prachuap Khiri Khan from Hua Hin to Bang Saphan Noi.

Damage includes uprooted trees, fallen coconut palms, and further destruction to seawalls and promenades, such as the one at Ao Prachuap, which earlier storms had already weakened.

Beachfront vendors and businesses, including 22 shops near Hua Hin’s Centara Hotel and seaside stalls in Ao Prachuap, have been forced to close or relocate temporarily due to strong waves and hazardous conditions. The disruption has heavily impacted local commerce, according to the authorities.

In response to the worsening weather, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation issued a new warning for 11 provinces in central and southern Thailand, including Prachuap Khiri Khan, Surat Thani, and Narathiwat, advising caution against flash floods, landslides, and rough seas from January 15th to 18th. Emergency teams and equipment have been stationed in vulnerable areas to assist with potential disasters.

Bit old to be taking risks in conditions like that.

But I suppose the wind was too enticing.
