Former Miss Universe Porntip ‘Bui’ Simon (nee Nakhirunkanok) is among many people who have lost their homes in the devastating wildfires in California.


In her Facebook post, the Thai=born beauty queen wrote: “We lost our beloved home in Malibu yesterday. So many precious memories in that special house where my babies were born and raised. My first home and sacred nest for 25 years has now been reduced to ashes - erasing all the belongings, photos and mementos of the last few decades in this shocking moment. I am, though, profoundly aware of how precious life is and that our friends and loved ones are what truly matter most.”


In another post, she wrote: “Please pray for the brave firefighters and all those affected by the horrific California fires. I have lived here (USA) most of my life and I have never experienced anything as devastating as this! Friends and families have lost everything, while countless lives and homes remain in harm’s way by the continuing eruptions of fires. How I choose to handle stress is to look for ways to be helpful. Los Angeles is home to the world’s largest expat Thai community and the Thai Consulate General there has set up an emergency operations centre to assist Thais affected by the wildfires. At least five people have been killed so far.


Pornthip was born on February 7, 1969, in Bangkok, Thailand. In the early 1970s, her family relocated to the United States, where she attended Washington Irving Middle School and Franklin High School in Los Angeles. She later earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Pepperdine University.


In 1983, at the age of 15, she participated in the Miss California Teen USA pageant, achieving first runner-up. Upon returning to Thailand, she won the Miss Thailand 1988 pageant, earning the opportunity to represent Thailand at the Miss Universe pageant.


At 19, she was crowned Miss Universe 1988, becoming the second Thai woman to win the title after Apasra Hongsakula in 1965.


She was the first to win both the Miss Universe title and the Best National Costume award in the same pageant.


In 2002, Bui married Herbert Simon, an American businessman and owner of the Indiana Pacers basketball team and Simon Property Group.


She is the president and founder of the Angels Wings Foundation and serves on the Board of Regents of Pepperdine University, the Board of the Children's Museum of Indianapolis as a Distinguished Advisor, and the Board of Governors for the Dream Foundation.

Are the fires which happen every year more devastating because rich people homes are burning?

Was I not clear enough? California has terrible wild fires every year. Are the fires this year much worse? Or are they getting more press because famous people are affected?

Yes, this fire is much worse and in a very populated area. Yes, getting more attention because many famous people’s houses burned.

Times have changed.

^I Googled her and she still looks lovely now at 55 or 56. Proof that "Asian don't raisin". (Asians don't wrinkle... until they do... Similar to "black don't crack") Her appearance at present reminds me of AO's wife - both beautiful Thai women.

Re: the California fires, I do think that they're getting more attention now because more rich & famous ppl have been affected. I've seen news or clips or mention of Milo Ventimiglia, Reese Witherspoon, Ben Affleck, Miles Teller, Mandy Moore, James something (an older actor), etc. I feel for the ordinary ppl who've lost their homes but more so for the animals which have been displaced (dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, etc). Some families had to vacate their houses & live in hotels, some of which only allow dogs (or no pets at all). As such, they've had to place their pets in shelters, hopefully temporarily.

^Lol. It's a surprise that you haven't heard of that one, BLD. It's somewhat common among Americans (I think millenials) which means that Asians don't age fast (and blacks too), while white ppl age faster/ look older. (white ppl have thinner skin on the face = ages faster, also has less melanin)

If you Google pics of the Thai forner Ms Universe and her (white) husband, she still looks good while her husband looks..... (granted, she may have had some procedures done) Same with Lucy Liu, Ming-na Wen, Tamlyn Tamita, Lea Salonga - they all still look good.

Re: blacks and "black don't crack" - look at Will Smith & his wife Jada, Denzel Washington, etc - they may have gray hair (or no hair, for Denzel) but they seem to have preserved their looks. (heck, even Barack Obama!)

Just let me giggle a bit that you think those people haven’t had cosmetic procedures to keep them looking good.

Jada especially has had her face filled in a lot.

Asian women, in general, that move to the US set themselves up and spend a copious amount of money to stay looking younger so they can update all their friends back home who couldn't emigrate on social media. Nature of the beast which keeps so many wanting to move. Its also why so many track down older US men on various websites hoping they can land the big fish.

To be fair Katie.i do get it. that Asian woman age well and that's fantastic. I wish I could age at the same pace. But that's not gonna happen. I'm a realist there's a few fallacys re Asians. They will do your homework but eat your cat, tight pussys. Oh I say no.more
