Dog Brings Improvised Bomb Home, Udon Thani Family Narrowly Escapes Tragedy

At 1:30 PM on January 2nd, 2025, police in Yoi Non Sung, Udon Thani, were alerted to a shocking incident where a dog brought an improvised explosive device (IED) wrapped in black tape into a home that also operates as a restaurant in Mueang District.

The homeowner, publicly identified as Sgt. Maj. Jitakorn Thalangjit, 34, placed the tennis ball-sized bomb into a cardboard box filled with dried grass for cushioning and covered it with a car tire on a sand pile beside his house.

Bomb disposal experts later safely secured the device in a sand-filled metal container and transported it to a remote area for destruction.

The device was identified as a makeshift bomb, often created by local teenagers and discarded near police checkpoints. Authorities have warned the public to avoid handling suspicious objects, as even small bombs can cause severe injuries or fatalities.

Sgt. Maj. Jitakorn recounted that he discovered the bomb after his 4-year-old son innocently brought it to him, asking, “What is this, Dad?” The family dog, Latte, a playful 9-year-old Labrador-Golden Retriever mix, had fetched the bomb from the roadside. Fortunately, it did not detonate during the incident.

Thanks for posting that, I had the same thought but couldn't find a way to express myself in such a way that readers would find it interesting.

Is it a sobering thought that these days you and TG often play the 'willy role' here?

It certainly doesn't have anything to do with being 'interesting'.

There might be some similar devices lying around where the dog found it. I guess they've had a good look.

    I hope more don't explode.

    That would be bad.

Useful to know that there are random IEDs here. Down south yes, I never thought about them being here in Udon Thani. Something to bear in mind, in the unlikely event that I ever trip over one.

I got a bad case of the mechanical dandruff in udon once but that was about 20 odd years ago. That's the worst thing that ever happened. Didn't own a dog though. Apart from that inconvenience.i quite like the place.
