A 75-year old retired official is in police custody in Nakhon Ratchasima province after he drove his car into a group of students and their parents in front of a school, killing a traffic officer and injuring about 10 students and parents.


One seriously-injured student, a four-year old boy, was later pronounced dead at a hospital.


Police say that the suspect was given a breathalyser test, which showed his blood alcohol content (BAC) level at 194 milligrams.


The suspect old the police that he was heading home in Buri Ram province, after attending a reunion party at the Second Region Army head office in Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat).


The accident took place late yesterday afternoon, in front of Ban Don Khwang School in Mueang district, as Pol Lt Wimut Taensupho, a deputy traffic inspector for the Mueang district police, was directing traffic.


A bronze sedan, reportedly moving at high speed, rammed into a group of students and their parents as they were crossing the road from the school.


Wimut and several students sustained serious injuries. Five other students were also hurt.


EMTs administered CPR on the officer at the scene, but were unable to save his life.
