New minimum wage to come into force on January 1

The tri-partite Wage Committee agreed today to increase the country’s minimum wage by between 7 and 55 baht per day, with the highest minimum rate of pay being 400 baht per day, effective January 1.

Only workers in Phuket, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri and Ko Sui district of Surat Thani will receive the maximum rate of 400 baht.

The rate in Mueang district of Chiang Mai and Hat Yai district of Songkhla will be increased to 380 baht while the rate in Bangkok and six surrounding provinces will be adjusted to 372 baht.

For the remaining 67 provinces, there are 17 wage rates representing an average increase of 2% from the current rates, to be decided by the wage committees in each province based on the cost of living, social conditions and the abilities of the employers to cope with the wage rise, said Boonsong Thapchaiyuth, permanent secretary of Labour.

Boonsong said that the Wage Committee has entrusted the sub-committees in each province to recommend a suitable minimum wage for their province and their feedback was taken into account.

So how many jobs and how many lifetimes will the average worker need to work to save up enough money to buy a reliable car?

My staff make less than minimum wage, I think, but take home about 30k each after tips.

And they’re twins, so quite doable and even more so if they go halves.

I'm pretty sure there are easy ways to get around paying minimum wage here, offering a room to sleep in or offering food at breaktimes, thus due to providing accommodation and/or daily food one is exempt on a technicality. Could be wrong. Our local Scotsman is the man to ask, apparently.

I don't know what the minimum daily rate is for a barmaid in my zone, but I know I pay a damn sight more that the other bars on the strip. In fact I pay double what they were getting before I took over.

Also, we are a business, not a company. We are not VAT Registered and pay a fixed tax yearly. I doubt my staff file a tax return...

I tell you what though, for a small bar running on 2 staff, 30k a month is a pretty good takeaway for a job where you just sit on your ass, drink and make drinks. It's not a hostess bar and the staff are behind the bar only.

However, trustworthy staff are hard to come by so best to be generous as possible if you want to keep them.

And one of them doubles up as a bouncer where the other one can drive the team bus.
    Lang may yer lum reek...

Thing 1 worked for me in a previous business and I rehired her for this one.

Thing 2 was a Grab motocy taxi/delivery driver that would hang around between fares and just muck in.

I managed to hold out for about 3 months of free work before my Mrs hired her.

Worked herself into a job and abruptly quit Grab.

    They're happy.
