Anyone interested in star gazing, or seeing Jupiter when it is at its closest to the Earth, are invited to an event in Benjakitti Park on Saturday from 5pm to 10pm.

“Starry Night over Bangkok 2024” is jointly organised by the National Astronomical Research Institute and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA). It will not only feature star gazing, but also a night nature walk through the park, one of Bangkok’s landmarks, and a talk on Jupiter, which is the main theme of the event.

Telescopes will be made available, so that star gazers can geta good look at Jupiter and its moons, as well as other planets in our solar system.

Assistant Professor Wiphu Rujopakarn, deputy director of the National Astronomical Research Institute, said that more than 12,000 people have already expressed interest in taking part in the event, adding that everyone is welcome free of charge.

There will be souvenirs for participants, courtesy of the National Science Museum.

Deputy Bangkok Governor Sanon Wangsrangboon said that this star gazing event in the middle of Bangkok is one of the largest organised by the BMA and it is expected to draw a large number of people, even though visibility can behampered by city lights.

He hopes, nonetheless, that the event will inspire many people to become interested in astronomy.

For convenience, Sanon said the city administration has prepared parking spaces and mobile toilets.
