Airlines ground Bali flights after volcano erupts

Airlines cancelled flights to and from the Indonesian resort island of Bali on Wednesday, leaving travelers stranded after a nearby volcano catapulted an ash tower miles into the sky.
At least 16 international routes were affected after Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki on Flores island spewed a nine-kilometer (5.6-mile) tower a day earlier, the general manager of Bali's international airport said in a statement.
Flights from Singapore, Hong Kong, Qatar, India, Australia, Malaysia, China's Pudong and South Korea's Incheon were all either delayed or grounded, Ahmad Syaugi Shahab said Wednesday.
Animal clinic worker Samsudin, 52, from Indonesia's main island was transiting in Bali to Malaysia and forced to spend the night at the airport.
"I'm sleeping here rather than going back to Java. It is far," he told AFP.
"I'm waiting here, until tomorrow," he added, saying he bought a new flight after his AirAsia ticket was refunded.
Australia's Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia all grounded flights, while Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, India's IndiGo and Singapore's Scoot also listed flights as cancelled on Wednesday, an AFP journalist at Bali's airport said.

I know there was one rumbling last time I was there, Mt. Agung in Bali itself. Got some nice pics.

They'd evacuated a load of people away from it.

But Flores is an hours flight away from Bali. I stayed at Rinca at the west end of it when I went to Komodo. This volcano is hundreds of km further east at the other end.

...and in Haiti gangs are shooting at commercial airlines. A Spirit Airlines flight and two other flights were hit by bullets.

Nature acting up in Bali and a societal meltdown in Haiti has beachgoers rethinking their holidays.

The Federal Aviation Administration prohibited U.S. airlines from flying to Haiti for 30 days after gangs shot three planes and the United Nations also Tuesday temporarily suspended flights to Port-au-Prince, limiting humanitarian aid coming into the country. Bullets hit a Spirit Airlines plane when it was about to land in the capital Monday, injuring a flight attendant and forcing the airport to shut down. Photos and videos obtained by The Associated Press show bullet holes dotting the interior of a plane. Australian media in a panic. No Christmas holidays for strayans. The eruption is on Sumatra. Three days ride away with a very good horse.

Even Mt Agung in Bali is 70km away from the airport.

It did rain very heavily here last night. Now the sun is out, so bathing weather here.

Bali bogans will be distraught. But a volcanic eruption is no picnic. I was in the p.i when pinatubo popped the havoc that caused was intense to say the least.

My bad. Flores remains over 500km east of Bali Airport. The island of Bali is popular with Aussies because it’s cheap and Oz isn’t. Oz media panicking woke Aussies.
Very limited risk to Bali. Even with strong winds in the wrong direction, it will likely be dispersed by the time it gets here.

Isnt it about re-routing air traffic away from plumes? Going aroud them instead of through them?

Yes, which is why I said "Re: BA009".
