Tankhun Jitt-itsara, an MP-turned-activist, has called for an investigation into an elephant centre in Chiang Mai that failed to relocate its elephants before a major flood hit the area, resulting in the deaths of two blind jumbos.
He did not name the centre, which was the only site where elephants died due to the flooding. Other elephant shelters in the province relocated their elephants in advance.
Tankhun also mentioned that the shelter in question continued to sell entry tickets, despite being alerted about the approaching flood.
Each elephant shelter should be required to disclose its income, otherwise it could exploit its status as a foundation for its own benefit, he noted, adding that Natural Resources and Environment Minister Chalermchai Sri-on should launch an investigation into the matter.
