Riverside residents in Bangkok warned of possible flooding from October 13th

Sixteen riverside communities in Bangkok are being advised to move their belongings to higher ground, check electrical plugs and to keep updated on water conditions in the Chao Phraya River, in light of the increase in the rate of water being discharged through the Chao Phraya Dam and the high tides expected from October 13th until the 23rd.

The communities at risk include Samsen Soi 19, at the foot of Krungthon Bridge, Samsen Soi 13 and Thevaraj Kunchorn in Dusit district, Tha Wang and Tha Tien in Phra Nakhon district, Pathum Khongkha Temple and Talad Samphanthawong district, Matanusorn, behind the Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital, In Banchong Temple and Bang Khlo Nok Temple in Bang Kho Laem district, Rongsee on Rama 3 Road in Yan Nawa district, Charoen Nakhon Soi 29/2 and Chang Nark-Saphan Yao in Khlong San district.

The Royal Irrigation Department said today that the amount of water being released through the Bhumibol, Sirikit and Kwae Noi Bamrung Dan dams into the Chao Phraya River is being maintained at 2,326m3/s today.

The department is, however, draining 464m3/s from the Chao Phraya River into the irrigation system on its eastern and western flanks.

Bangkok governor says capital is safe from flooding, unless….

While some riverside communities in Pakkret district of Nonthaburi province have been flooded by overflows from the Chao Phraya River, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has offered his assurance that the city is safe from flooding, unless the volume of water being discharged through the Chao Phraya Dam in Chainat province exceeds 3,000m3/s.

Residents in some communities, such as Bang Phut Samakkhi 2 and another located next to a Chinese shrine, told Thai PBS reporters that their communities have been inundated since yesterday, but that they had already moved their belongings and cars to higher ground.

“Ubon”, a resident of the Chinese shrine community, said that the ground floor of his house is submerged and his whole family has moved to the second floor. He noted, however, that the floodwater is not as deep as it was in 2011.

Another resident, “Or”, complained that she has had to stop selling food, because her ground floor is flooded and the toilet is now unusable.

Meanwhile, Governor Chadchart said that there is no immediate threat of serious flooding in the capital, because the volume of water flowing down from the Chao Phraya Dam remains at about 2,200m3/s, which is below the tipping point of 3,000m3/s.

He said that the city administration is, however, watching for the effects of the high tide on October 20th, adding that it is not a major concern because, by then, rainfall will have reduced.

For the large Rongsee community, which is not protected by concrete embankments, the government said that city officials have reinforced sandbag embankments and built wooden bridges, as a means for residents to enter and exit the community.

Meanwhile, the Department of Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported yesterday that 44 provinces across the country have been flooded since August 16th, but the situation is now returning to normal in all but 19.

Altogether 242,558 households have been affected by the widespread flooding, 52 people have died and 28 injured.

The provinces which remain flooded include Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Tak, Phitsanuloke, Nakhon Sawan, Sukhothai, Udon Thani, Kalasin, Chaiyaphum, Maha Sarakham, Ubon Ratchathani, Sing Buri, Suphan Buri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani and Nakhon Pathom.

88 kilometers of Chao Phraya River flood barrier ready to protect Bangkok

Bangkok’s flood protection system along the Chao Phraya River stretches 88 kilometers, with flood barriers standing between +2.80 to +3.50 meters above mean sea level (MSL). These barriers are designed to handle water flow from the northern regions at a rate of approximately 2,500-3,000 cubic meters per second without causing overflow.

However, Governor Chadchart said authorities are not complacent. There are still 120 flood-prone areas along the barrier, with 64 already addressed and the remaining spots under ongoing improvements. Officials are continuously monitoring water levels and inspecting the structural integrity of the flood defenses along the Chao Phraya River, as well as the Bangkok Noi, Maha Sawat, and Phra Khanong canals. They are also preparing sandbags and reinforcing the barriers to ensure protection from floods caused by high tides and northern runoff.

In addition, residents living in 731 households across 16 locations in 7 districts outside the flood barriers along the Chao Phraya River have been warned of potential impacts. These residents are advised to move belongings to higher ground, check electrical outlets, and stay informed on water conditions.

Flood Alert for Central Thailand as Water Levels Rise from October 13-24

On October 11th, 2024, Mr. Jirayu Huangsub, the advisor to the Prime Minister, warned of potential flooding in central provinces from October 13th to the 24th.

The Thai Royal Irrigation Department reduced water discharge from the Chao Phraya Dam to ease flooding in downstream areas. This has improved conditions in Singburi and parts of Ang Thong provinces.

However, provinces such as Chainat, Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Bangkok, and Samut Prakan remain at risk of flooding in communities outside flood barriers during this period.

In Lamphun, flood relief operations have intensified in areas affected by the overflow of the Ping River, with water pumps and pushers deployed in locations like Ban Sob Pa and Ban Pa Phai. Full drainage is expected by October 15th.

In Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district, cleanup efforts continue in two main and six minor zones, with progress reported at the Sailomjoy Market, where accessibility has been restored, according to Jirayu.
