Hundreds of residents from three villages in the Phanat Nikhom district of Chonburi province gathered to protest against a major pig farm, accusing it of releasing wastewater into a local canal and causing a persistent foul odor for several years.

The protest, which occurred at 11 AM today, July 24th, was carried out by villagers from Village 6, Village 9, and Village 10 in the Phanat Nikhom district. The protesters gathered in front of a major pig farm (name withheld pending government official investigation), which spans 20 rai and raises over 8,000 pigs.

The residents have accused the farm of releasing wastewater into a local waterway and causing a foul odor. Fed up with the issues, they demanded responsible authorities immediately address their grievances.

Mrs. Lamyai Jankrajang, a 70-year-old local resident who raises several hundred ducks, claimed that over 200 of her ducks died after the pig farm allegedly discharged wastewater into the canal where the ducks bathe. She called for the pig farm to take responsibility and provide compensation for her loss.

In response to the protest, Mr. Anuwat Anansuphak, the Mayor of Thung Khwang Sub-district Administrative Organization, along with representatives from Phanat Nikhom District, the Public Health Department, and the Department of Livestock Development, visited the pig farm in question to investigate.

They concluded that the farm must resolve the issues of wastewater discharge and bad odor within 30 days. If the farm fails to comply with these orders, the authorities will seek its closure. This prompted the protesters to eventually quit their demonstration.

Meanwhile, the pig farm operators did not provide their counter-argument to the press at the time of reporting and chose not to speak to the media.
