A Thai female driver and her passenger were moderately injured after they reportedly tried to outrun a train and got hit in Chonburi on the late afternoon of May 27th, 2024.
At around 4 PM, Pan Thong police were notified of a collision between a train and a pickup truck at a railway crossing in the Kho Loi area of Pan Thong district, Chonburi province.
Upon arrival at the scene, police and rescue workers found the pickup truck, a bronze-gray Isuzu D-Max, overturned in the middle of the railway tracks. The vehicle was heavily damaged, with its wheels pointing towards the sky.
Approximately 800 meters away, a gray-red SRT freight train was discovered. The train’s front-end was slightly scratched.
Rescue workers found two Thai women, only identified as Ms. Orathai, 45, and Ms. Rungthip, 54, injured inside the pickup truck. They were treated for their injuries, which included neck pain and chest tightness before being transported to Pan Thong Hospital for further medical attention.
According to the train driver, Mr. Panan, 39, the train was traveling from Lad Krabang to Laem Chabang when the accident occurred. He stated that he observed another train passing in the opposite direction from Laem Chabang to Bangkok. After the passing train cleared the crossing, Mr. Panan noticed the pickup truck attempting to cross the tracks despite the lowered crossing gates. He activated the train’s horn, but the pickup truck failed to stop, resulting in the collision.
An eyewitness, Mr. Somkid, 62, who was sitting at his house near the tracks, described seeing the pickup truck allegedly ignoring the crossing gates and being struck by the train. He also heard the train’s warning horn.
Pan Thong police are investigating the incident and will likely take appropriate legal action against the pickup truck driver after she fully recovers from her injuries.
