Thread: Monk Arrested for Evading Gas Payment and Drug Possession After Collision with Police

On May 14th, 2024, Mueang Maha Sarakham police officers received a report from a gas station manager of a monk in a truck allegedly evading a 1,300 baht gas payment in Kantharawichai, Maha Sarakham.


Mueang Maha Sarakham police and relevant officers were dispatched to pursue the suspect heading to Mueang Maha Sarakham. It was reported that one police officer on a motorbike was hit and had his right leg’s bone fractured.


However, the suspect reportedly collided with a songthaew carrying six passengers, causing the suspect’s truck to stop moving. According to the police report, good citizens reportedly took hold of the suspect, publicly identified only as Mr. Suthep, a 48-year-old monk, who was allegedly drug-intoxicated and speaking incomprehensibly.

The monk suspect was escorted to the Mueang Maha Sarakham police station for interrogation and tested positive for drug tests. It was also reported that the police found three amphetamine pills.


According to the police report, the monk suspect was heading to Phetchabun and filled fuel at Kantharawichai, Maha Sarakham, before evading the payment. The monk suspect reportedly fled and had an accident colliding with the police officer and the songthaew before being arrested.


The monk suspect told the police that he took illicit drugs while driving and bought two amphetamine pills for 100 baht using money offerings from Buddhists. Initially, the police pressed charges of possessing illicit substances and taking illicit substances while driving against the monk suspect.
