Labour ministry to raise minimum wage to Bt400 max by December

The Ministry of Labour is considering raising minimum wages, which currently range from 328-354 baht per day, to a maximum of 400 baht, according to Labour Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.

He said today (Thursday) that by how much wages will be increased depends on the economic situation and inflation in each province, but the maximum should not exceed 400 baht per day.

The minimum wage issue was discussed at a meeting today of the Senate Labour Affairs Committee, which was attended by Phiphat and Labour Permanent Secretary Pairote Chotikasathien.

The committee chairman, Pol Gen Adul Saengsingkaew, said that adjusting the minimum wage in Thailand must take into consideration the wages in the other ASEAN member countries, to ensure the price of Thai goods and the investment climate remain competitive.

The tri-partite wage committee, comprising labour representatives, the private sector and the government, will decide the appropriate rate for each province.

The Pheu Thai party promised in its electoral manifesto to increase the minimum wage to 600 baht/day within four years.

Only an idiot might consider this country to be a democracy.

As you allude, Norton, “ minimum” is a misnomer, it is in practice, for the greater majority of the occupational workforce, the maximum.
