Chiang Mai Airport Plans Expansion to Boost Passenger Capacity

BANGKOK (NNT) - Chiang Mai Airport is preparing to unveil its development plan to boost airport capacity and receive more flights domestically and internationally.

Chiang Mai Airport Director Vijit Kaewsaitiam stated that the airport will construct a new terminal as part of its development plan, increasing airport capacity from 8 million to more than 16.5 million visitors per year. Flights will also be doubled to up to 30 flights an hour while operating hours will be extended to facilitate more international flights, especially from Europe.

The terminal project is in line with the Airports of Thailand’s strategic plan and the provincial development plan for Chiang Mai province. The first phase of the terminal construction will take three years to complete, with the terminal expected to be operational by 2029.

Airport officials are expected to report details of its development plan to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin during his visit to Chiang Mai province this weekend. The premier is scheduled to visit the province on September 15-17 and will meet the airport’s executives to discuss the airport’s expansion plans and the effects it will have on nearby communities.

24 hour operation is probably going to annoy the shit out of them.

I was wondering about your comment until I realised they'd omitted this from the article:

On Sunday, September 17, he is expected to engage with locals living in tambon Mae Hia of Muang district in Chiang Mai. This area lies adjacent to the airport and will be affected by the introduction of night flights.

For years there were three flights around midnight going to China which passed over Mae Jo. They weren’t so noisy unless it was bad weather, then you’d think they were going to clip the roof. Glad they are fewer and not regular now. The only other flights I hear are daytime flights going to Chiang Rai.

It seems pot luck as to whether they slam the joystick hard to starboard and turn before they get to me or just carry on over you.

Sometimes it's obviously the weather, but otherwise it seems completely random.

What qualifies as near an airport? I’m 20 km away. Most flights have changed direction before they get over my house. Only flights going north are the ones I can hear. As I said before, it’s only in bad weather they are really noticable.

Neither Harry nor I am on the side of the airport where planes come in for landing.

Well usually. I have had the odd A320/B737 whizzing very close past me when the wind is coming from the south.

Whatever happened to the plan to move the airport toward the Mae On District? That news years ago inflated land prices out there. They could have had multiple runways out there.

Perhaps the "influential figure" who bought the land lost his mojo....
