Wavering or Unwavering: He's Probably Out

Thai Election Winner’s Unwavering Policy Stance Is Misstep: Poll

    • Move Forward’s refusal to backtrack proves costly: poll
    • Party leader Pita lost vote in Parliament to become premier

Move Forward Party’s unwavering stance to fulfill certain campaign promises made during the Thai general election is the main misstep behind its failure to form a new government, according to an opinion poll.

Party leader Pita Limjaroenrat lost his first premier vote after members of the Senate and pro-establishment parties voted against him. They are opposed to his election pledge to amend the royal insult law, which penalizes criticisms against the monarchy.
About 43% of respondents view the party’s policy insistence as a key factor contributing to inadequate support to successfully set up a new administration, according to an opinion survey by the National Institute of Development Administration. The poll was conducted between July 24 and 26 among some 1,310 respondents nationwide.

Many senators have ruled out their support for any government coalition that includes Move Forward, which won the most seats in the election but whose progressive platforms have riled the royalist establishment.

About 27.6% of those surveyed said Move Forward was defeated in a political game in parliament, while 9.5% viewed the party as reckless for not checking Pita’s qualifications to be a prime ministerial candidate, according to Nida.
Thailand’s constitutional court suspended Pita as a lawmaker, pending a final verdict on his disqualification over alleged breach of election rules by holding shares in a media company.

Some 35.2% of respondents expect mass, yet controllable, political rallies to take place if Move Forward eventually becomes an opposition group in parliament, the Nida poll showed.

People who voted for Pita are hoping he will run again in four years.

Standing up for his principles is the right thing to do. In 4 (or less) years people will remember whether he stayed true or gave in the the corrupt establishment.

Nobody wins by trying to take on the establishment in one go. Pita should be well aware of that. They need to take small chips out until the top comes crumbling down.

First things first, get rid of the rigged 250 votes. Get back to an elected Senate, then expose the corrupt, one by one.

Well, the Thai will always fault anyone with principles and the idiot writing for Bloomberg is your typical specimen, gutless, unethical and sycophantic to his betters.

The point is, Pita won the election mandated overwhelmingly by a significant majority of the electorate who shared his views and if this was a civilised country with a functioning rule of law adhering to fundamental democratic principles he’d be prime minister and leading a government chosen by the people.

But it’s not and he isn’t because a majority of unelected proxies for the junta voted against him which is why they were appointed. They are there in order to preserve the status quo protecting vested interests and the role of the army and any party challenging that, regardless of the democratic mandate, will never be allowed to take power. It’s a coup and there it is.

But the deal has been done. The Puea Thai party has agreed to form a government with the Bumjaithai group etc, excluding the MFP, in return for which Thaksin will receive a pardon.

The election has been stolen and there it is.

Pita and MFP are airbrushed from the Thai snake pit.

Dreadful society indeed, and where are the protests from the majority whose vote was trashed. On holidays, eating goong on the beach, hanging out in malls, traipsing through parks and generally not giving a toss.

^^ Yep, bit naive really. Thing is the Establishment aren't as naive and will try to counter whatever moves any party makes to reform the current loaded system.

Naivety has nothing to do with it. He went to the ballot box on declared policies and staked his success on them - he won an overwhelming majority.
Is it naive to think a former junta claiming that the election would be a valid democratic one would then use its rigged senate to negate it entirely.
It’s a coup but Pita’s error was perhaps thinking the Thai people give a flying fuck about democracy.

Maybe give it another hundred years.

    Right.

People out eating 'goong' on the beach today don't care about democracy.

    Got it.

An election was stolen from them. Their chosen leader has been removed and now threatened with exclusion. His party has been sidelined, and a minority government will take power without a mandate.

If it were anywhere else there would be riots and paralysing protests with a general strike and blockades.

But here, nope the Generals declared a long public holiday and everyone agreed it would be such fun.

Bad news for farang. Anutin and Thaksin both dislike us and will change the settlement rules again.

Do you think that Thaksin got exiled for allowing massmurder or for corruption ?

No; he got in trouble due to his idea of cutting out the middleman in corruption.
